Perfect 10 for DU Women Athletes

Many of DU’s athletes compete in relative anonymity. Still, this year has shown some eye opening individual and team performances from DU women.

  • Gymnast Nina McGee, performing a floor exercise at a home event this weekend at Magness Arena, scored a perfect 10.  The DU team went on to defeat Southern Utah and West Virginia.
  • Paige Bradley, a senior guard, scored her 1,000th Pioneer point on January 1st and then led the Pioneers to two consecutive victories this week over North Dakota State and IPFW. She scored a career high 31 against NDSU and chipped in 13 Saturday in an overtime home win.

  • Amanda Sanders recently won Summit League Swimmer of the week, her second award. The junior broke her own Summit League and Denver records in the 100 Breast (1:00.65) and 200 Breast (2:08.63). Both of her record times set at the Hawkeye Invitational are NCAA B-standard times. Her meet-winning time in the 200 Breast ranks 11th in the NCAA this season
  • With a team ravaged by food poisoning, Kristine Haugen grabbed first-place in the women’s giant slalom at DU’s first event, the Utah Invitational, to lead DU to the overall win. Her teammate,  Sophomore Monica Hubner, was named in April as National Women’s Alpine Skier of the Year by the United States Collegiate Ski Coaches Association before the start of this season.
  • Volleyball captain Sarah Schmid was named to the AVCA Division I Midwest Region Honorable Mention team for her senior season. She led DU’s VB team to a 27-8 record and the NCAA playoffs and was the only senior on the squad.
  •  As LetsGoDU reported at the time,  golfer Jessica Carty shot a ridiculous round of 66 in October to spur the University of Denver women’s golf team to win at the  Ron Moore Women’s Intercollegiate at Highlands Ranch Golf Club. Her performance was one of many exceptional performances that weekend by the women’s team. The team was missing one of their best players and another DU golfer shot the team low, Katharina Baratta.

With swimming/diving, gymnastics, skiing, and basketball in full swing and lacrosse, golf, and tennis around the corner, more great performances are sure to come.

  1. Wow, what a great accomplishment with the perfect 10. A good weekend for DU, with Nina McGee’s perfection and the hockey sweep that I certainly didn’t see coming.
