10 Frozen Four Observations From Tampa

  1. Best tweet:

  2. Worst Idea: Only allowing 25 minutes for 20,000 people to re-enter Amalie Arena for the second semifinal game on Thursday – a very bad idea.
  3. Something that should happen again: The Frozen Four in Tampa. Great venue and fantastic hosts.
  4. Biggest Off-Ice Mistake: DU failing to bring the pep band to the semi-final game. (Suggestion: If necessary, charge for the pre-game reception and let that revenue help pay to get the band to the event. Let’s fix this for Philadelphia Lax when if DU makes the Final Four.)
  5. Great Idea: The North Dakota and Quinnipiac cheerleaders added energy and excitement to the games. DU should look at sending the cheerleading/dance squads throughout Magness instead of just above the student section to build spirit and energy.
  6. Worst Decision: Some argue that DU’s timeout following a faceoff in the DU end should not have been taken. That being said, could you imagine the second guessing if DU sat on a timeout and ND still scored the winning goal?
  7. Championship Final: Take away about 7 minutes in the second period and DU played about as well as they can play. The best team won Thursday night – but the best two tournament participants met for the championship Thursday night.
  8. Amateur Hour: There must not be any beer in North Dakota.
  9. Tie – Biggest Turnaround: The team’s record the second half of the season and Monty earning Pioneer fans’ hearts. Coach Montgomery made all the right moves this year – on and off the ice. We like the way he coaches and his teams love him. It’s official – we are in the Coach Jim Montgomery era!
  10. Dress for Success: Let’s give the hockey team a first-class locker room makeover. Monty has made a locker room upgrade a priority this off-season. If Denver is to remain one of the nation’s premier hockey programs, we need to give the players competitive facilities. Even if  you can only afford $10, $25, $50, or $100 or more – let’s send a message to the administration and team.  Make it rain – fill up Ryan Peck’s mailbox: $$$$, 2201 East Asbury, Denver, Colorado 80208.

  1. Good points. DU also needs to make subsidized travel & excused absences for students. How could this be funded. Set aside money from the student activity fee each year and in years that DU makes the NCAA Final Four in hockey, mens & womens hoops, mens & womens lax or make the Tourney in Gymnastics they have the opportunity to attend. Unused funds or in years DU doesn’t make it, the kitty grows.

    1. subsidize student travel ? wow ! that is crazy one indeed ! And what do you cut for that?

I do appreciate your efforts over the years to strengthen support for DU hockey (and athletics/school spirit in general) but you are really digging to finds things to whine about these days – can’t you accept that DU administration (both athletics and overall) is quite different than a few years ago is doing somethings well ?

Anyway, sounds like folks had a good time in Tampa, wish I could have joined you

      1. There is no question that DU is doing some things well. DU has outstanding sports performances in many sports, tremendous coaches, kids who graduate, strong academic performances and clean programs. On those metrics, it’s the highest level of performance we could possibly expect as fans. Frankly, it’s never been better to be a DU fan.

Where our administration needs some help is getting people to come to games, valuing and growing our traditions and creating more excitement around the fan experience. On those elements, we’re going to keep pushing, because we’re way behind in those areas…

  2. My conversation with a UND fan in men’s restroom between 2nd and 3rd period with UND leading Quinnipiac 2-1.

    me: Can you smell it?
    Fan: no. smell what.
    me. A National Championship
Fan: No, we need to score more goals
me: Actually you don’t. If Quinn doesn’t score again, you win the big prize. (trying logic)
    fan: what prize?
me: roll my eyes and walk away.

20% of UND fans are just fine. Other 80% act like idiots. Sioux did bring some hot women to the game.

  3. Oh now, if Tampa gets a 3rd date, that would really fry my bacon. I maintain that the Pepsi Center and Denver should be on the list again. Mainly for Denver’s airline accessibility and affordable fares. The argument for Tampa is the abundance of airlines who feed Florida from the northeast. It’s obvious the city of Denver wants a Super Bowl though. And they’re not going to go against the grain just to get 2 days of college hockey here, especially given the local fanbase; and the Avs certainly aren’t helping drive interest right now.

  4. There were some cool North Dakota fans that I chatted with. But they have a higher ratio of drunk idiots/non-drunk idiots then most schools. Always have, always will. Some of them are just laughably idiotic and act like they never drank before. You just have to blow it off and say “North Dakota”…and it will make sense and give you peace.

It was a great Frozen Four experience. No regrets about going whatsoever. DU put together a great comeback. I re-watched the game, and I really feel like we were the better team overall, but their main line got the goals, and ours didn’t. Gambrell, Heinen and Moore just didn’t have the moments of brilliance to carry the team for another game.

Loved Tampa!!! What a great vacation…even with the loss there were enough beaches and other cool things to do nearby to make it an excellent time.

As for the level of support from the school. I’m undecided about that–I guess the pep band would have been nice. Perhaps cheerleaders, too. But I thought the reception at the hotel was nicely done. I do wonder why they had such a short window of time to buy tix through the DU ticket office the week before the game. That seemed lame. DU really just needs to hire Damien and then they will see how it’s properly done.

  7. Good points Anon. The DU reception was awesome. My experience at other DU hosted events has been very positive. It was also great to have Dan Ritchie and Chancellor Chopp there – they both like to interact with alums and guests which makes it very special.

  9. Best reception I ever attended. Yes, the atmosphere and balmy temperature added to it. I too appreciated and enjoyed Dan Richie and Chancellor Chopp attending.

  13. It was the best reception I’ve ever attended. The Sioux fan at the game that pulled my ribbon out of my hair can suck it though. Jerk.
