Pioneers Add Transfer Anthony Roberson

Denver basketball is continuing to make moves to their roster.

6’5″ shooting guard Anthony Roberson attended Weatherford College (JUCO) and most recently, Texas State. He has found a new home at the University of Denver for his junior year according to Verbal Commits . The 2-star player averaged 21.4 minutes per game with Texas State, 4.7 ppg., 5 rebounds, and .7 steals per game.

Roberson’s older brother, Andre was a first round pick (26th) in the 2013 NBA draft by the Oklahoma City Thunder after three standout years with the CU Buffs, DU head coach Rodney Billups’ former employer.

According to a recent  article in the Texas Redzone Report, The Roberson Pedigree Comes to Texas State, his father,  John Roberson, was an All-American basketball player at New Mexico State, before playing 12 years overseas after college and recently having his jersey retired by the Aggies. His mother, Lisa Roberson, was also an All-American at New Mexico State in volleyball.

After his senior season at Wagner High School in San Antonio, Anthony Roberson didn’t receive any DI offers to continue playing basketball. At just 6’0”, the undersized guard was overlooked by many schools. So, he enrolled in a prep school in Las Vegas, Nevada for an additional year of development and growth.

After that, he matriculated to Weatherford College where he averaged 11.7 points, 6.8 rebounds and led his team with 50 blocks for the 2014-15 season. He received offers from DI schools like Nevada and University of Texas-Arlington but accepted a scholarship to play at Texas State.

After a year of DI play for Texas State, per NCAA transfer rules, Roberson is expected to sit out 2016-17 before taking the floor for the Pioneers in 2017-18 with two years of eligibility left.

    1. He did…ala David Robinson @ Navy. He was 6’8″ when he entered the academy and grew to 7’0″. BTW, that was 2″ taller than the Navy’s 6’6″ limit.

  1. Athletic, strong defender and rebounder from what I hear — which is what DU needs. Any offense he provides is a bonus…
