Photo: DU added more All-Americans this week following last week’s NCAA hockey national championship. DU athletics keeps turning the numbers at the Magness entry like an odometer.
What an incredible week it has been for Denver sports.
The DU women’s gymnastics team finished 9th at the NCAA’s and garnered two All-Americans – star freshman Maddie Karr was named first team all-around and second team for vault and bars. Senior Julia Ross was named second team for the bars. To top it off, senior Leah Lomonte was named the 2017 Big 12 Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Year. The future looks great with most of the team returning next season.
The DU men’s hockey team returned for a stirring National Championship celebration on Tuesday evening and hockey awards dinner on Friday evening. And of course, the week was full of speculation about the future plans of Monty and many of the students-athletes who may or may not leave early.
In relative anonymity, #13 women’s lacrosse (12-2, 6-1 BIG EAST) is off to a great start in league play pummeling Vanderbilt 17-4 and Villanova 17-10 during the week. Liza Kelly keeps stacking up wins, now 200 plus, and Denver seems to have found a great home in the BIG EAST.
But the highlight of the week had to be DU super fan Charles Dorison’s (DU ’72) unassisted double-double.
It all began with a trip to Chicago for the Frozen Four. Following the event, Mr. Dorison returned to his home in Bedminster, NJ where he is the linchpin of a major real estate firm. Undaunted, less than 7 days after the Chicago hockey championship and a full week of work, Dorison completed the second leg of the feat – a 68 mile trek on Saturday by car to St Johns University Queens Campus to cheer on DU men’s lacrosse to a 18-12 victory,
Affectionately known as ‘Dunker’, Dorison can be spotted at nearly every DU athletic event in the Northeastern US and at playoff games for lacrosse, basketball and hockey around the nation.
At the conclusion of his double-double, all Dorison could say was, “Where are my car keys?”
Dorison’s recent unassisted double-double achievement was well documented.

What a week it was for the Pioneers and their fans. And again, a special shout-out to Dunker as his incredible Pio-streak will likely end next weekend as DU men’s lacrosse returns to Peter Barton Stadium in Denver.
Thanks for the accolades, but it’s a labor of my love for DU. Any time spent with DU fans, athletes, and parents and administrators, is time well spent and certainly enjoyed. At the DU tailgate in Queens NY on Saturday, I met the parents of injured DU laxer Max Begoon. They came down from New Canaan, Ct even though their son did not make the trip.. They told be they were in Chicago for the Frozen Four, reason being, their son Ryan is a star defenseman for Frozen Four participant Harvard. Last night I just wanted to relax, so I took a 15 minute drive from my home to Highpoint Solutions Stadium for a Md.@Rutgers lacrosse game. Little did I know I would be treated to a tense 3OT thriller with the Terps coming out on top.
It’s always a treat to celebrate another DU victory with the Dunker.
You’re welcome Dunks. When I lived on the East Coast, it was always a highlight to go to DU games – you were always there and had a great understanding of DU history and sports facts. One of the reasons I got interested again in DU athletics was having you there at the games cheering our teams on!
