Denver Men surge to top 5 in Capital One Cup rankings

Oklahoma, Penn State, Colorado and Alabama men just have to wait behind the University of Denver. Denver leads the Big 10, SEC, and Big 12 to name a few of the ‘Power Conferences’ and sits 5th nationally in the Capital One Cup rankings among all men’s Division I athletic programs.

And, the NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Tournament hasn’t even started yet.

This year just keeps getting better and better.

Criteria

The Capital One Cup is awarded annually to each of the best men’s and women’s Division I college athletics programs in the country. Points toward the Capital One Cup are earned and tracked throughout the year based on final standings of NCAA Championships and final official coaches’ polls. One winning men’s and one winning women’s program will be crowned after the completion of the final NCAA spring championships.

  1. This is an AMAZING achievement to date for DU. The Capital One Cup puts far more weight on major sports than the Learfield Directors Cup does (which weights all sports achievements equally).

For example, DU gets more points for its NCAA third place finish in men’s soccer than it does for winning the NCAA Championship in ice hockey. The “Big Sports” in the the Capital One Cup are considered to be Football (FCS and FBS), Basketball, Soccer, Lacrosse and Baseball).

If DU Lacrosse can make it to the Final Four in lacrosse this year, a top-5 finish is likely assured.

When you consider hundreds of millions of dollars that other bigger schools pour into sports program, to see DU ahead of every SEC, Big 10, and Big 12 school and all but four others is nothing less than astonishing.

    Bravo!

  3. The Duke’s of James Madison? Someone probably typed that in as a joke and the proofreader goofed and inserted JMU instead of Duke.

    1. JMU won FCS football championship which is a NCAA championship, unlike FBS division.

  4. JMU won the NCAA FCS Football Championship in 2017- and won all 60 of its points.
