Mothers Day Takes on New Meaning for Former Pioneer Star

Former DU soccer star Kortne Ford’s mother, Laurie, was recognized last night at the Colorado Rapids soccer game for her current battle against cancer. Anyone who knows about the personal life of Kortne Ford knows that his mother plays a central role in his life.

His mother already battled breast cancer and now she has the fight of her life with Stage 4 bone cancer. A  GoFundMe page has been set up for Laurie Ford’s treatments so we are encouraging all LetsGoDU readers to log in and contribute this weekend for Laurie.  The fund is targeting $25,000 and is currently $11,875 as of this writing.

The Denver Post wrote about Ford’s childhood battles and his physically abusive father. When his mother found out what was happening she won sole custody and moved to Greeley with him.

“Up until about 10 or 11 years old, I didn’t know there was anything wrong with it,” Ford said of his father, with whom he had spent every other weekend. “I thought that’s how all fathers treated their kids. I tell people I was a Transformer. I was happy and energetic around my mom, then (with his father), I was quiet. I only addressed him ‘Yes, sir,’ scared to mess up. It was a frightening time.”

Ford came up through the Rapids Academy and was signed as a “homegrown player” in January. He has been a surprise, first year starter this season. Ford gave his all to the Pioneer family and now is our chance to give back on this upcoming Mother’s Day weekend.
