BERKELEY, Calif. — The University of Denver men’s soccer team (1-4-1) topped the University of California Golden Bears (3-1-1) by a score of 1-0, completing their last match of six consecutive road games Sunday afternoon at Edwards Stadium.
As Denver worked deep into the first half, it felt like the Pioneers scoring drought would never end. But the Pioneers made a frantic foray into Golden Bear territory and DU’s Preston Judd found net in traffic to give the Pioneers their first goal and lead since three games earlier against Notre Dame. Denver fought off five corners and ten shots to hold the halftime advantage, 1-0.
Denver played in their own end of the field much of the second half. DU faced another five corners, ten more shots and a penalty-kill save by DU’s keeper Will Palmquist at 78:33 to hand Cal their first defeat of the season. Denver’s defense weathered numerous Cal attacks from the wings but held on for the confidence building road win.
Denver played on Goldman Field in the historic (and cavernous) Edwards Stadium, built in 1932. The track and field doubles for men’s and women’s soccer. The stadium provides views of the Berkeley Hills and Strawberry Canyon to the east, and San Francisco Bay, the Golden Gate Bridge and the San Francisco skyline on this sunny Sunday afternoon.
Denver returns to the pitch Saturday, September 21st at 5:00 pm MT against SMU at CIBER Field.
