The #10 Denver men’s soccer team (7-2-2, 2-0) traveled to Charlottesville, Virginia to take on the red-hot #21st-ranked University of Virginia Cavaliers Tuesday afternoon. The Cavaliers, a divisional leader in the ACC, were riding a three-game winning streak, including two top 10 wins on the road last week just prior to the DU match. Denver used a Lukas Fisher penalty kick after a whistled takedown in the box five minutes into the second half and played solid defense the rest of the way to shut out Virginia, 1-0.
DU had also beaten the Cavaliers in Charlottesville last season as well.
The win cemented Denver’s place in the top 10 rankings and provided another quality win to its record. Denver keeper Isaac Nehme stopped four shots en route to the shutout. It was a physical match with 22 fouls but no red cards. Virginia had six shots on goal to Denver’s four but Denver made the PK stick.

Denver’s road trip continues as the Pioneers travel to Minneapolis to play St. Thomas in Summit League play on Saturday, October 9th before facing #25 Pittsburgh (ACC) in another power-five match on the road Monday October 10th.

Huge, huge road win over a ranked ACC program. These ACC programs won’t come to Denver voluntarily, so the Pios need to beat them on the road.
There are about 250 total teams in NCAA men’s soccer, and for DU to be in the top 10 is really amazing (there are 63 D-I teams in D-I hockey and about 70 teams in men’s lacrosse) for comparison.
Awesome! Congrats. There have been a couple of special Denver men’s soccer seasons in recent memory. I wonder if this will be one of them.
