DU men’s Basketball tips-off at 7:00 Saturday night at Magness Arena vs. Jacksonville. The Pioneers will be absent two of their top three scorers from last season along with a new coach and staff, a new playing style, and the likelihood that they will go another year without a title or a trip to March Madness.

Bitter Rivals Plot to Add New Summit League Sport

In an unprecedented meeting of rivals,  students from North Dakota and North Dakota State met privately at the Mayville, North Dakota VFW to discuss the Summit League’s sports offerings. With the near certainty that UND will be joining the Summit League (see article), the students worked to identify and propose a new, lower cost sport to the Summit League. Quiet Weekend in Review

Women’s Volleyball

DU women’s volleyball (19-6, 11-2 Summit) faced Oral Roberts at Hamilton Gym. ORU had dumped the Pioneers 3-2 a month earlier in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Hamilton Gym had a good crowd and the DU pep band added to the environment as the Pioneers were never threatened in a 3-0 pay-back victory. Continue reading Quiet Weekend in Review

Pioneers Stun Portland in 2nd OT behind Shinyashiki

While the night was played even-up on the scoreboard through two halves and two overtimes, #6 Denver (15-0-3) played the aggressor. As time wound down in the 2nd OT, Portland (11-4-1) seemed content to fall back and play for the draw on the pressing Pioneers. Then, suddenly, with less than three minutes to go in the game, DU’s Andre Shinyashiki owned the moment with an incredible double move and golden goal leading the Pioneers to a heart stopping 2-1 win in double OT. North Dakota President Promotes Participative Decision Making

The University of North Dakota President Mark Kennedy put together an 18 member committee to recommend $1.4 million dollars in cuts to the UND athletic department. They were asked to carve out at least 2-4 teams from their athletics department and consider a new conference affiliation. The committee convened a meeting of coaches and teams in a public forum where the various sports programs begged for their program survival. Denver Basketball Media Day in Review

Denver held their annual Basketball Media Day (video) yesterday with a bit more than a week to go before opening tip-off. The staffs from both the Men’s and Women’s teams were present and answered the media’s questions.
