The Denver Post’s Death Spiral Will Affect the University of Denver

One has only to think of Dan Ritchie’s sentiment that, “all great cities must have a great university’. The University of Denver absolutely achieves Ritchie’s message, but it’s becoming increasingly difficult to get that message to the local public.

Chancellor Chopp’s 2025 Strategic Plan lays out exactly how the school plans to bridge that gap, But if DU really wants to achieve this plan to more effectively integrate DU into the greater community, a healthy presence in the community, through various media platforms is critical to DU. Additionally, if DU athletics wants to expand their reach to a broader local audience, they must look at alternatives to the current model, which arguably places too much emphasis on a partnership with the struggling Denver Post. State Cuts Will Likely Impact Summit League Membership

The stress on public state university budgets is probably going to directly impact Summit League membership.

The University of North Dakota, yes that North Dakota, from the Big Sky, has to make up a $1.8 million dollar annual shortfall in their athletic department. One of the options on the table is leaving the Big Sky to join the Summit League. UND President, Mark Kennedy, recently moved the department’s chief financial officer out of the athletic director’s control and under the university’s finance department, while forming a committee to examine “a number of factors, including the sports we participate in, conference participation, the number of athletes that we serve and the cost of the programs.Continue reading State Cuts Will Likely Impact Summit League Membership

Three Things to Know about the ‘New’ Campus Lounge

Here are some details on the “new” Campus Lounge.

  • The name, Campus Lounge, and horse-shoe shaped bar will remain unchanged.
  • Instead of the usual beer served such as Miller and Budweiser, the new proprietors will offer beers from local craft breweries including Tivoli, Renegade, Epic and Spangalang. The same for more locally sourced foods and bistro comfort food.
  • It will have a retro style, playing on the 1950’s

The tavern is expected to reopen around Thanksgiving.

Real Estate Surge Beginning to Strain University Park Neighborhood

Photo: Realtors post ‘Coming Soon’ signs’ to generate interest. On average, houses are selling in less than 10 days after listing in Denver.

Surging real estate values are changing the University Park neighborhood and all of Denver. This price surge is impacting businesses, residents, and students.

According to the Denver Business Journal, Metro Denver continues to outperform the national average on home-resale price gains, maintaining year-over-year increases over 9 percent for another month, according to the latest S&P/Case-Shiller Home Prices Indices report. In July, the only major U.S. cities among the 20 closely tracked by Case-Shiller to see greater annual price gains were Portland, Oregon (up 12.4 percent) and Seattle (up 11.2 percent). Denver’s Case-Shiller home price index reached a new high of 187.42 in July. That means that local home resale prices averaged 87.4 percent higher than they were in the benchmark month of January 2000, according to the Case-Shiller report series, based on non-seasonally-adjusted data. DU Weekend Sports Recap

Riding a roller coaster never looked so good

The 8th ranked DU men’s soccer team played the game of the weekend on Saturday in a back and forth affair with IPFW. Defensive midfielder Graham Smith scored the game’s opening goal in the first half and the final goal in the 79th minute to squeak by Fort Wayne 4-3 in DU’s  Summit League opener at CIBER Field. This game was called ‘sloppy’ by head coach Jamie Franks but overall, it’s tough to call and 8-0-2 record a disappointment. Continue reading DU Weekend Sports Recap
