Helmets for Women? Why Not

In Florida, state officials issued their first-ever requirement for girls to wear protective hard helmets in lacrosse. The changes have sparked a firestorm by players and coaches who believe the headgear requirement is unnecessary. Already, modified girls rules attempt to limit physical contact. Ultimately, assuming current women’s rules of play remain the same in women’s college lacrosse, should helmets become an NCAA requirement for women’s college lacrosse? Nina McGee Takes Texas, Title & Makes History

Photo: From the top of the podium, Gymnast Nina McGee captures the moment.

Gymnast Nina McGee achieved a DU first when she became an NCAA champion on floor. While competing in the NCAA Championship all-around, she captured the top score on her bread and butter floor exercise and captured Denver’s first ever gymnastics title. Competing as an individual entrant, she took on gymnasts from the nation’s best programs such as  Florida, Alabama, Oklahoma, and UCLA and earned the top step to a standing ovation from the crowd in Fort Worth, Texas.

From all accounts she became a clear crowd favorite as she worked through the all-around rotations culminating in her remarkable floor routine.

Her back story includes a 5-year battle overcoming serious injuries through raw determination and her eventual climb to the top of collegiate gymnastics. The All-American gymnast must now be considered among DU’s greatest individual athletes ever. Continue reading Nina McGee Takes Texas, Title & Makes History

LetsGoDU Misses on Hoops Pick

O.K…so we missed this one!

LetsGoDU’s local choice for the DU’s open hoops scholarship was Ladarius Thomas from Aurora Central. Yesterday, he signed with the Division II Black Hills State University Yellow Jackets. They play in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) and are based in Spearfish, South Dakota.

The waiting game continues to see who Rodney Billups signs to a letter of intent with DU’s last remaining scholarship.

Conference Basketball Coaching Change Could be Game Changer

He’s a new head coach. He was an assistant coach for a power 5 program and he was a good recruiter. Sound like Rodney Billups? I’m talking about the new coach of South Dakota State University – TJ Otzelberger. Continue reading Conference Basketball Coaching Change Could be Game Changer

DU Hoops Takes a Pass on Signing Day

The top reasons DU hoops did not sign a prospect to a National Letter of Intent yesterday:

  • Just because everyone else is doing it…
  • Couldn’t find a pen
  • Signee too tall for the doorway
  • Waiting for Kobe to return phone call
  • Lost his number
  • When ‘Family Advisor’ left an empty suitcase, DU filled it with coffee mugs, pennants, and a fleece vest
  • First one to call DU wins
  • Waiting for Zach Miller to double at the point
  • Coaches torn between two prospects. A 9+ hour tie breaker game of h-o-r-s-e raging in Hamilton gym
  • Who signs anything on the 13th?

LetsGoDU will update you when DU Basketball announces their new scholarship player.

Gymnast Nina McGee Goes for Texas-Sized Achievement

Denver’s toughest athlete is set to compete against the nation’s best.

DU gymnast Nina McGee will be heading to Fort Worth later this week to compete in the women’s NCAA Gymnastics championships as an individual qualifier. Unlike many other competitions, McGee will be traveling to the event without any of her teammates. She will be a contender for the national all-around championship after finishing 11th overall last year. The championships will be held at the Fort Worth Convention Center Arena, April 15-16. Open Scholarship Marks Billups’ First Move

DU has just one open scholarship roster spot for the 2016-2017 season. According to sources close to the Denver basketball program, DU has several players under consideration to fill their only remaining scholarship opening by national signing day April 13th.

Will Denver use their valuable pick as a symbolic selection and pick a local urban player? Will the Pioneers pursue the best available athlete, despite geography? Will they try to fill a positional need or select a player best capable of filling Rodney Billups up-tempo ‘vision’?  Continue reading Open Scholarship Marks Billups’ First Move
