DU Drops 3-2 Decision to Huskies in OT

Denver had their chances in overtime but a beautiful tip-in by St. Cloud State’s Ryan Poehling at 2:27 of OT sealed the Pioneers fate. Denver was outworked and outshot – 43-26. Evan Cowley replaced Tanner Jaillet at the end of the 2nd period but St. Cloud continued to control the tempo and earned the win with a dominant performance.

LetsGoDU will post a series summary Sunday.  Of course, you can read about this game and follow tomorrow nights game live on twitter (LetsGoDU@LetsGoDU).

Tomorrow’s game starts at 6:00 pm MT.

Kortne Ford authors textbook early exit

Sure, the University of Denver has been jolted before by star athletes that leave early. But most of these departures have been managed pretty well. It’s been a few weeks since it was announced that junior Kortne Ford had signed with the Colorado Rapids. While circumstances vary widely on why student athletes depart college programs early, Ford’s exit was engineered to the benefit everyone. Continue reading Kortne Ford authors textbook early exit

Denver Gets Blitzed at Omaha, 97-88

Photo: Marcus Tyus lights up the Pioneers with 30 points in UNO win.

Wednesday night Denver (11-8, 3-3) met University of Nebraska Omaha (11-9, 4-3) at UNO’s Baxter Arena. Denver tried to play the Mavericks at their own game – and it was never close as the Mavericks displayed their quickness and athleticism. Marcus Tyus’ 30 points and 24 points from Tra-Deon Hollins sealed the Pioneers fate. Despite shooting 63.6% from the field, the Pioneers could not stop an aggressive UNO squad that thrives on pressure and playing fast. The Mavericks shot 56.4% from the floor, nailed 12 of 20 3-point shots, had 10 steals and went 23 of 29 from the line to blitz the Pioneers.   Continue reading Denver Gets Blitzed at Omaha, 97-88

Pioneer men look to steal a couple W’s on the road

With bunched standings in the Summit League, the top programs must hold serve at home and steal a couple of wins on the road to stay in the top four. South Dakota already stole one of Denver’s home games, 75-69, on January 4th. This week, Denver (11-7, 3-2) goes on the road against Omaha (10-9, 3-3) Wednesday and IUPUI (8-11, 2-3) Saturday.

Denver needs to steal back the earlier home loss to the South Dakota Coyotes.  Continue reading Pioneer men look to steal a couple W’s on the road

Zach Miller’s departure leaves a void

Photo: University of Denver Magazine

After hearing the report that star midfielder Zach Miller has left the DU men’s lacrosse program, I came across this highlight tape (below – ignore the music) of Miller and was reminded of his extraordinary stick handling, shot accuracy, passing, and more importantly, his ability to make everyone other Pioneer on the field better. Final score 79-55 – and it wasn’t even that close.

Denver put together their best all-around game of the Rodney Billups era.

Pioneer fans were treated to a basketball clinic as Denver (11-7, 3-2) ran roughshod over one of the top teams in the Summit League, North Dakota State (12-6, 4-1) . Sure it was a home game but the the Denver squad gave fans a glimpse of what Rodney Billups “play fast” basketball looks like – on both ends of the floor. The Pioneers, led by a dominant Daniel Amigo’s 28 points and 12 rebounds, thrashed North Dakota State University on the offensive end and shut down their penetrating offensive drives on the defensive end.  Continue reading Red Hot Pioneers Burn Bison, 79-55
