New Ice Arena Provides CC an Opportunity to Bridge Local Divide

According to the Colorado College student newspaper The Catalyst, the student government has agreed to a resolution to bridge the growing divide between the townsfolk and the college.

Tensions were exacerbated when the college broke ground on a new on-campus ice arena which halved the capacity of the old city Broadmoor World Arena arena – leaving locals, literally, out in the cold. Continue reading New Ice Arena Provides CC an Opportunity to Bridge Local Divide

Denver Ski Team Poised for 25th National Championship Run

Tim Healy is a regular contributor to LetsGoDU on collegiate skiing.

No team at DU toils in more anonymity, yet has had more successful results than Denver Skiing. This year is no exception as Denver athletes compete on faraway slopes and trails in sports that are challenging for spectators to watch or even understand how competitive their team is for that given season. This is especially true in the Nordic events where skiers (like runners or sprinters) use NCAA regular-season races to secure qualifying times or use them merely as training exercises in order to peak for the national championships. And wax selection and team strategy figures in outcomes as well. Never was that clearer than several years ago when Denver dominated Utah in the Rocky Mountain Region Championships and was dusted 10 days later by Utes at Nationals. Denver (3-1) used a smothering defense and forced turnovers (24) to down the Cleveland State Vikings 10-6 at the 2020 Faceoff Classic at Peter Barton Stadium. NCAA Moving to Allow for More Flexible Student-Athlete Transfer Rules

According to a number of news sources, the NCAA is quickly moving to change their transfer policy for student-athletes, allowing a one-time transfer process for collegiate athletes with the ability to compete the following academic year. This new policy would trump the current requirements for student-athletes transferring to a four-year NCAA school who must complete one academic year in residence at the new school before they can play for the new school unless they qualify for a transfer exception or waiver – usually financial hardship or outright waiver from the departing institution. In a somewhat low key news release this past week, the University of Denver Division of Athletics announced a new 10-year sponsorship deal with Centura Health, a large health care system located here in Colorado.  But, make no mistake, this burgeoning sponsorship, called “major and substantial” by one University source, is a key victory in sustaining athletic success at DU.
