DENVER – Once a slide starts, it’s hard to stop. The longer it goes, the more momentum it gains. At a certain point, it becomes an avalanche that’s impossible to stop. In the midst of their own four-game slide, the #4 Denver Pioneers welcomed the #20 Western Michigan Broncos to Magness Arena and lost game one of the weekend by a score of 2-1 to extend their winless streak to five, dating back to the Minnesota Duluth series two weeks ago. DENVER – Just a few weeks ago, everything was all sunshine and rainbows for the #2 Denver Pioneers. They sat at 8-0-0 after dominating their way through their early nonconference slate. Now, four games later, at 8-2-2 and winless (in regulation) in NCHC play, the Pioneers have been giving a few heaping doses of reality, the latest in the form of a 4-1 home loss to the archrival #9 North Dakota Fighting Hawks at Magness Arena on Saturday night. Seasons are marathons, not sprints and this is likely just the first of a number of bumps in the Pioneers’ road to Detroit, but tonight, that little, barely noticeable bump got a whole lot bigger. DENVER – The puck fell to Colton Poolman’s stick in the right circle. The North Dakota senior captain took a chance, put it on net, and found twine just over Magnus Chrona’s shoulder. And just like that, in the second overtime, with the #2 Denver Pioneers and #9 North Dakota Fighting Hawks playing for an extra point in the NCHC standings, the team in green took two of the first three points on this rivalry weekend with a 2-1 victory at Magness Arena in what will go down as a 1-1 tie for NCAA purposes. 44-0-0 is no longer in play for the top-ranked Denver Pioneers. That’s worth mentioning only because the overly repetitive bit died with DU’s already slim chances of going unbeaten this year. Denver was going to lose a game this year. Denver will lose more games this year. That they even went 8-0-0 to start the season is impressive by itself, especially for a team that traditionally starts slow. The Pioneers finally came back down to Earth this weekend during their trip to northern Minnesota to take on the #7 Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs. Denver won in a shootout on Friday but lost on Saturday. The Pios come home with two of the six possible points that were at stake this weekend ahead of a rivalry clash with North Dakota. The top-ranked Denver Pioneers looked every bit of their consensus #1 ranking for the better part of three periods on the road against the #7 Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs, but for a defensive breakdown over the last 10 minutes of regulation. But thanks to Magnus Chrona’s magnificence in goal and Brett Stapley’s creativity in the shootout, Denver overcame their third period blown lead to earn the extra point for NCHC purposes. If you weren’t around on Twitter yesterday, you likely missed a long thread that we tweeted from our account that offered a visual representation of how all eight NCHC teams have fared in the weekly USCHO poll since the conference’s inaugural season in 2013. It’s no secret that the NCHC has dominated college hockey in recent years in both nonconference and postseason play. The Colorado Springs-based conference has had at least one participant in every Frozen Four since that first season and between North Dakota, Denver, and Minnesota Duluth, it has won each of the last four national titles. DENVER – Goaltender Michael Corson may not have entered the minds of most Denver fans ahead of the 2019-2020 season. The assumption was that it would be a two-horse race between Devin Cooley and freshman Magnus Chrona. Then Cooley got hurt before the season started and those plans changed. Tonight, against Atlantic Hockey’s Niagara, Corson shined for the top-ranked Pioneers as he stopped all 16 shots he faced en route to Denver’s 4-0 victory with more than 170 Denver Hockey alumni on hand to witness the shutout. It was announced earlier this week that the #1 Denver Pioneers would unveil a new alternate uniform for the 70th Anniversary Weekend celebration and earlier this evening, the program unveiled what they look like. You will notice there are a number of parallels between these alternates and the Battle on Blake jerseys that the Pioneers wore against Colorado College at Coors Field. Top-ranked Denver and Boston College tangled this weekend at Magness Arena and Denver came away with 3-0 and 6-4 victories for its fifth and sixth straight wins to start the season. It was a great Homecoming weekend for the Pios both on and off the ice. DU played great hockey all weekend against a big, skilled, NCHC-like Boston College team and it bodes extremely well for the rest of the season (and its eventual Pairwise positioning). At times, Denver dominated BC and at others, they were forced to play on their heels and find a way to push back. Denver was successful on all fronts and if you’re a DU fan, you have to be pleased with how the first three weeks have gone for the unbeaten Pios.
