Special teams, strong second period power Denver past Boston College to Pioneers’ third straight sweep

DENVER – A goaltenders’ duel this game was not. On Saturday night at Magness Arena, the top-ranked Denver Pioneers used three early second period goals and a strong special teams performance to put away the #6 Boston College Eagles and extend its regular-season nonconference winning streak to 17. The Pioneers’ impressive – if stressful – 6-4 victory came just a night after they struggled to score just one goal against BC goaltender and 2019 NHL first-round draft pick Spencer Knight. Chrona outduels Knight as Denver shuts out Boston College in Homecoming goaltender showcase

DENVER – Sir Spencer was Boston College’s Knight in shining armor. But Cole Guttman found the one flaw in Knight’s game early in the second period and that was all that top-ranked Denver needed to beat the #6 Eagles, 3-0 on Friday night at Magness Arena. Denver’s win was their fifth straight and 16th straight in regular season nonconference play. Denver vs. Boston College Q&A with BC Interruption

After a year hiatus in 2018-19, Denver and Boston College are hitting the ice once again. Two years ago, DU and BC played in the latter half of the Pios’ trip to Beantown to play Boston University and Boston College. This time around, the Eagles are making the trip to Denver and are the Pioneers’ esteemed Homecoming weekend victims guests. Continue reading Denver vs. Boston College Q&A with BC Interruption

Pioneers remain undefeated with sweep of Lakers, run nonconference unbeaten streak to 15

Just like last weekend, 44-0-0 is still in play for the Pioneers. Likely? No. Possible? Again, sure, why not? Last weekend it was the Alaska Fairbanks Nanooks that the Pioneers swept to start the season on the right foot. This weekend, after flying to Detroit from Fairbanks before bussing to Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, the Pioneers swept the Lake Superior State Lakers with 3-1 and 4-3 victories. The Pioneers had to overcome first period 1-0 deficits both nights, but once again, thanks to timely offense, and heavy doses of Pepto Bismol in the third period on Saturday night, Denver is returning home from a 10-day road trip at 4-0-0 (just 40 to go). Heart Attack Pios: Ryan Barrow’s last-minute goal lifts Denver to road sweep

Denver is still undefeated thanks to Ryan Barrow’s goal with 20 seconds left that gave the Pioneers a 4-3 victory over the Lake Superior State Lakers in Sault Ste. Marie, MI. The Pioneers and Lakers were tied at 1 after the first period but two second period goals from Bobby Brink and Hank Crone. The Lakers battled back in the third to tie it back up at 3 with just five minutes left. But on this night, it was Barrow who played hero. This  is the second time in four games that Denver has received a late third period goal to give them the victory. Cole Guttman was the third period hero in game one against Alaska Fairbanks.

We will have more in our weekend recap tomorrow but in the meantime, what are your thoughts on the soon-to-be top-ranked Pioneers earning their second straight road sweep to open the season?

Solid goaltending & timely offense lift Pioneers to season-opening sweep

The Pioneers are 2-0-0 and 44-0-0 is still on the table. Likely? No. Possible? Sure, why not? After the University of Denver hockey team opened their season with a sweep in Fairbanks, Alaska against the WCHA’s University of Alaska Fairbanks (groundbreaking stuff, here) with 4-3 and 3-0 victories, the Pioneers are off to another hot start and the direction of this year’s team is starting to take shape. And folks, that shape, at this point, looks pretty darn good.

(And we also recognize that this recap is being posted a day after the series ended rather than the night it ended. Sue us. Save the energy your unreasonably angry comments would require.) Continue reading Solid goaltending & timely offense lift Pioneers to season-opening sweep

2019-2020 University of Denver Hockey Season Preview

Here we are, entering LetsGoDU‘s fifth year in its current form and the University of Denver hockey team is embarking upon a season looking to earn its fourth Frozen Four berth and win its second national title in that span. Now, it’s important to remember that there is a huge difference between correlation and causation but try, for a moment, to simply appreciate the incredible run that the Pioneers have been on over the past five years. Pretty great, huh?

(If you’re one of the North Dakota fans who so kindly gave us your hate-click, feel free to abstain from that activity. We’ll understand.) Continue reading 2019-2020 University of Denver Hockey Season Preview

DU Men’s Lacrosse Schedule: Duke & North Carolina to make trek to Denver

On Thursday, the University of Denver Men’s Lacrosse program was the first Division I lacrosse program to release its 2020 schedule. Just a few months removed from missing the NCAA Tournament for the first time since Bill Tierney took over the program in 2009, the Pioneers revealed another tough, exciting schedule, especially at home. The Pios’ 2020 schedule features two perennial powers – Duke & North Carolina – returning to Denver for the first time since 2017. DENVER – Just two days after they played their best, most dominant game of the season in a 17-11 victory in the BIG EAST semifinals, the top-seeded Denver Pioneers laid an egg against the reigning BIG EAST champion Georgetown Hoyas in a 12-9 loss. While the championship game loss didn’t end their season a year ago, barring a shocking decision on the NCAA Tournament selection committee’s part, Denver’s season is over. DENVER – It was the Denver Pioneers’ best, most dominant performance of the year and elated fans of the Crimson & Gold were left to wonder, “where the heck has this been all season?” Just less than a month after the Villanova Wildcats came to Denver and upset the Pioneers in a 12-11 thriller, the Pioneers returned the favor and then some in a 17-11 victory in the BIG EAST Semifinals at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium. After giving up the first goal, the Pioneers turned it on and poured it on jumping to a 12-3 halftime lead before cruising to the six-goal victory.
