DU Hockey Mailbag: What’s Wrong With the Top Line?

Just a few days ago, I came up with the idea to put together a weekly mailbag about DU hockey. Eventually, this idea may extend to a DU Athletics mailbag, but I’m going to start smaller with just hockey and let it go from there.

The whole point behind this idea is that it’s difficult to cover everything that readers want to know and answering every single question isn’t easy with only reader comments. As a reminder, if you have any questions about DU hockey, email me at letsgodu@gmail.com. The cutoff for every week’s mailbag is going to be at 6 PM MT each Wednesday. Trend to Muzzle Cheer Spreads

Earlier this year, LetsGoDU covered a story about DU’s student section at hockey games  that was seen as too raucous by administrators. While that story is no longer an issue, Sports Illustrated had a story on the increasing pressure in the state of Wisconsin on High School chants that do not show ‘respect’ for competitors.

The Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA) has issued a memo banning students from chanting certain words and phrases at basketball games that may be seen as hurtful. The words? Continue reading Trend to Muzzle Cheer Spreads

Visitors Brimming with Confidence

Photo: A confident non-starter, Senior Kyler Erickson

A solid UNO squad (12-7, 4-1 Summit) invade Magness Arena tonight. They have played Missouri, Colorado, and Minnesota tough and were, clearly, the most underrated team in the Summit Conference heading into the season.

In today’s edition of Omaha.com, a highly confident Senior Kyler Erickson said: “Traditionally, you want to split on the road,” he said, “but I think our attitude this weekend (against Denver & Oral Roberts) is we’re going to go and get two games. We’re going to knock those two teams out. That’s who we are, and that’s what we do.” Continue reading Visitors Brimming with Confidence

Summit League Basketball Needs to Grow Up

UNO, DU’s home opponent this Thursday, is a surprising 4-1 in Summit League play (12-7 overall) and looking to qualify for the league tournament and potentially, the NCAA Tournament. It really doesn’t matter, though. Continue reading Summit League Basketball Needs to Grow Up

Western Michigan Tops Denver in 3 on 3 Overtime

The Western Michigan Broncos earned the extra point in the NCHC standings on Saturday as they topped the Denver Pioneers 3-2 in 3-on-3 overtime. Taylor Fleming shot the puck past Jaillet on the rush just 1:13 into the 2nd overtime of the evening and immediately the Broncos players poured onto the ice to celebrate their nationally recognized tie. Proactive Response Needed to Address Microagressions

According to The College Fix, another university is taking on the issue of microaggressions. “At Pennsylvania State University” according to The Fix, “no hurt feeling is too small, no slight too inconsequential, no unintentionally biased statement too unimportant. Administrators want to know it all.”  Continue reading Proactive Response Needed to Address Microagressions

Pioneer First Half Surge Overwhelms Leathernecks

Denver (10-8) got off to their best first half of the season and held off a second half charge from Western Illinois (7-8) for a confidence-building 76-69 road victory on Thursday night in Macomb, Illinois. Denver streaked out to a 39-21 first half lead and comfortably fought off a second half push by the Leathernecks for the win. Freshman Thomas Neff and Senior Nate Engesser started the game with three point buckets and the first half rout was on. Duke Douglas, an unexpected hero, was everywhere for DU with 10 points and 6 defensive rebounds. Nate Engesser, getting his first start, led the team with 14 points. It was all 11’s for Marcus Byrd, Bryant Rucker, and super freshman Joe Rosga. The Pioneers bench outscored the Western Illinois bench 28-18. DU’s biggest player, Daniel Amigo was MIA for game -number three for the crimson and gold.  Continue reading Pioneer First Half Surge Overwhelms Leathernecks

Compromise May Submarine DU Prospects

As LetsGoDU reported recently, all the FBS (Football Bowl Subdivision) members are meeting this week to address a Big 10 proposal (they are at it again!) for football members that would require each conference to have divisions and a division playoff in order to qualify for consideration for participation in national championship playoffs. This would require the Big 12 to expand from the current 10 teams to 12 teams, create divisions, and have a championship game to meet these requirements. If the legislation is passed this week, it is widely expected that that the Big 12 would add the University of Cincinnati and BYU. BYU is currently an independent in football and in the West Coast Conference for other sports, a potential landing spot for DU athletics. Continue reading Compromise May Submarine DU Prospects
