DU Hockey Mailbag: The Battle on Blake is Finally Here

It’s been a long 9 and a half months since the Battle on Blake was announced last May. The excitement has built since then with various events and announcements. It’s finally going to culminate in, yep, you guessed it, a game. They’re actually going to play hockey at Coors Field this weekend!

Denver Hockey Alums to Skate at Joy Burns Arena

On Wednesday, the University of Denver hockey program announced that a number of program alumni are going to take part in a “friendly scrimmage” at Joy Burns Arena on Friday from 6-8 PM. Admission to the scrimmage is free.

This event comes on the eve of the Battle on Blake between Colorado College and the University of Denver. It reminds some of a version of the alumni game between the Detroit Red Wings and the Colorado Avalanche happening at Coors Field the day before the Stadium Series game next weekend. Puck Swami: Thoughts on the Battle on Blake, (Part 2 of 2): Beyond the Ice

Puck Swami, the Internet moniker of a longtime DU fan and alumnus, offers a two-part article this week as a prelude to the Battle on Blake. Part One focused some perspective on the ice and developed the history of the rivalry. Here, Part Two focuses on some of the off-ice elements of the rivalry and puts the outdoor game into a larger context.

Better Rivalry: Denver-North Dakota or Gold Pan?

It’s not often that University of Denver hockey fans are treated to two rivalry matchups in consecutive weeks. The past weekend saw the Pioneers earn an unlikely and important sweep over the University of North Dakota Fighting Hawks and this weekend, the Pioneers will play their second home-and-home of the year against Colorado College. Part One focuses some perspective on the ice and develops the history of the rivalry. Part Two focuses on some of the off-ice elements of the rivalry and puts the weekend into a larger context.

The “Battle on Blake” is almost here, and it promises to be the largest-attended DU-hosted sporting event since the University of Denver dropped football in 1961, as well as the largest attended DU hockey game of all time, with between 25,000-30,000 tickets sold as of Monday Feb 17. For that reason alone, it’s an event worth celebrating as a high water mark of spectator interest in DU sports in the modern era. UPDATE: Denver Officially Unveils Battle on Blake Sweater

Earlier on Tuesday, when practice ended, the University of Denver hockey program posted a video on Instagram of players seeing the uniforms they will wear on Saturday for the Battle on Blake for the first time. When you grow up in the 719, rooting for the Colorado College Tigers is instilled in you from a very young age. Colorado College hockey and Colorado Springs are one and the same. You don’t have to be a hockey expert to understand that the rivalry between CC and the University of Denver is like none other.
