Like most of us spoiled Pioneer fans, women’s volleyball is not in my top handful of DU sports to watch. I know DU Coach Tom Hogan does a great job with what he has and the team is almost always a Summit League champion (or a contender for that title), but it seems like that’s been the ceiling on the program for a while now. Beating South Dakota may be a good volleyball feat, but doing that is probably not going to move the needle very much at University and Asbury. To get average Joe fans like me interested in watching volleyball more regularly, DU probably needs to win beyond the Summit League level and become a national level, top-25 kind of program (as many of DU’s sports already are). Start with the good news. Denver is returning to the court this season with a loaded roster. Now, the bad news. So is defending Summit League champion, South Dakota. While Omaha and UMKC are also likely to make noise this season in conference play, this may be the most competitive volleyball season ever for the Summit League title. Better late than never, Denver women’s soccer wrapped up the Colorado Cup title in a dramatic 1-0 extra-time thriller against Colorado State Sunday in Denver. The title was Denver’s first Colorado Cup since 2013. Jordan Crockett found net a little over a minute into overtime for the win. Denver doubled up CSU in shots on goal, 16-8 in the effort.
According to The Hockey News, the NHL will allow teams to run ads on their jerseys. The move will see ads fit inside a 3-inch-by-3.5-inch rectangle, similar to what is done in the NBA. The decision comes after the NHL allowed teams to sell advertisements in lieu of team logos on helmets to help replace lost revenue due to Covid-19. At the conclusion of the 2020-2021 academic year, Denver had coaching openings in skiing (Nordic and Alpine), men’s and women’s tennis, and men’s and women’s golf. There are few immediate impacts on the University of Denver from the move of Texas and Oklahoma from the Big 12 yesterday. Mainly, this is all about football, TV money and Name, Image and Likeness (NIL) to drive more coverage, notoriety and, of course, money. The deadline is 2025 when the deed-of-rights expires for the Big 12 and Big 10 and when teams can exit without penalty while providing 18 months’ notice.
The University of Denver hockey program has made history. For the first time ever, four future Pioneers were picked in the first three rounds of the same NHL Draft. No Pioneers were selected on Friday night despite two of them, Sean Behrens and Shai Buium, being projected to be taken late in the first round. Instead, Saturday morning was busy at the corner of University and Buchtel as they both were drafted along with Samu Salminen and Carter Mazur within the first 70 picks of the draft.
