The Campus Lounge was filled to the brim with family, friends and local college hockey royalty sharing stories about Greg ‘Woody’ Woods. Woods passed away at age 61. The Woods family held a memorial in his honor, hosted by Jim Wiste, owner of the Campus Lounge and former DU hockey All-American.

Defenseman Woods (1975-79) is first in scoring from the blue line, 9th on the all-time DU scoring list and 4th in assists with 125. He holds the #1 slot in assists by a defenseman with a whopping 125 – 30 more than the nearest Pioneer. He is second all-time in total goals by a defenseman (51). For single-season team records, Woods is third and fourth for points by a defenseman (52, 52), second in goals by defenseman (19), and 3rd for assists by a defenseman (40) in a single season. As a player, the Minnesota born Colorado transplant used every inch of the ice.

Some long time acquaintances expressed surprise that his first name was Greg – they had called him ‘Woody’ for years. Others talked about Herb Brooks’ decision to not add Woods to the Olympic team because he left Minnesota, Brooks home turf, for Denver. Others were family, neighborhood friends, and former linemates from his 70’s teams and they shared more recent memories of Woods. Former DU head Coach George Gwozdecky and Associate Athletic Director Ron Graham were there and current head coach Jim Montgomery was expected to arrive later in the afternoon.

This neighborhood venue delivered a fitting, no frills, upbeat tribute for Woods.

In a note to LetsGoDU following the event, husband and wife  Shannon Stirling and Carol Baum asked what it would take to get Greg Woods into DU’s athletic hall of fame. If he is not currently enshrined, delivering the two-way defenseman to the hall would be a perfect capstone to his brilliant collegiate career.
