The University of California – Berkeley fell $150 million short for 2015-2016, according to the Office of the Chancellor. However, that is not stopping the university from moving forward with student funds for gender inclusive locker rooms for their student recreation center.
The College Fix reports that Cal will invest $2.7 million in the “gender-inclusive” Recreational Sports Facility locker rooms upgrade. The project is being funded by the school’s Wellness Initiative Fee, paid for by students as part of their annual fees.
According to a University spokesman, “This locker room project not only symbolically affirms our campus values of inclusivity and access for all, but it provides a tangible service for students who are currently being under-served.” Said Associated Students President Will Morrow in a statement posted on the university’s website, “In providing a safe and inclusive changing space, the Recreational Sports Facility is adapting to better serve the wellness of all members of our campus community.”
The facility will offer private changing rooms, showers, lockers and bathrooms stalls. It will also serve as a ‘gender-neutral access point’ to the campus swim facility. Campus officials say men, women and gender-nonconforming individuals will all be able to use the facility.
While one might logically assume UC Berkeley to be the first to offer this unique option, the University of Arizona has already broken ground on one.
Save some money for your students Cal. It sounds like the on-campus upgrades are being done for students since money spent is coming out of their wellness activity funds. ON CAMPUS is the key. Build enough private bathroom stalls so everyone can have privacy. People have to go and their dignity and privacy should be paramount. Let the students change and shower back in their living quarters. Don’t bring valuables. I don’t see the hardship here. When money is tight, adaptability is often necessary.
