DU Sophomore Conquers Self Doubt, Pioneers Win First Test of the Season

Denver Sophomore all-American Alexis Vasquez recorded the first perfect 10.0 of the 2020 NCAA season with a perfect beam routine to help the #7 Pioneers (196.700) defeat No. 21 Arizona State (194.675), No. 13 Auburn (194.375) and No. 25 Penn State (193.500) in Session #1 of the Collegiate Challenge in Anaheim, California.

In an open letter published mid-December, Vasquez opened up about her struggles with self doubt and depression. She reached out for the necessary help and support and touted the importance of seeking help.

  1. Scoring 196.7 right out of the chute in the first meet is a really strong sign for Denver, given that the very top teams are scoring in the 197-198 range by season’s end. Will be interesting to see how this team develops after the breakthrough the final four last year…
