Women’s Soccer, Men’s Lacrosse & Hockey Highlight Weekend Results

Another big collegiate sports calendar capped the final weekend before entering March. Denver had more wins than losses as the weather and schedules continue to heat up.

Denver women’s soccer (6-1, 6-0) started the weekend on Friday afternoon with a thrilling OT victory over South Dakota. Natalie Beckman rifled the ball into the Coyote goal on a corner kick at 99:14 for the  Pioneer win. Beckman’s goal capped a week when she was named Top Drawer Soccer player of the week. Shots-on-goal was 12-2 in favor of Denver. DU women’s soccer moved to 5-0 in Summit League play.

On Sunday, at 81:20, DU women’s soccer got a goal and a win on a Taylor Wells goal, assisted by Sami Feller and, of course, Natalie Beckman to move to 6-0 in conference play.

On Sunday, #14 Denver women’s lacrosse (0-1) had their first non-conference match of the season. Denver traveled to Boulder to take on the arch-rival CU Buffalos. Denver fell 14-7 on enemy turf. Denver was outscored 8-3 in the second half in the loss. This was the first game of the season for Denver, CU’s third game, and the Pioneers were missing key players, primarily preseason All-American Quinton Hoch-Bullen.

Denver volleyball (6-1) traveled to Tulsa to play Oral Roberts Sunday and Monday. The Pioneers defeated the Golden Eagles 3-2 on Sunday afternoon (19-25, 25-20, 25-20, 20-25 & 15-11) and are back in action Monday at 6:00 pm MT. Brianna Green and Laurin Poulter had 11 and 10 kills respectively while Lydia Bartolo had 6 service aces and 13 points.

On Friday, Denver women’s basketball (7-15, 5-9) defeated the visiting Omaha Mavericks in Hamilton Gym, 94-82 behind Meghan Boyd’s 31 points to move to 7-14, 5-8 Summit League on Senior Day. Clair Gritt, Alexius Foster, and Jasmine Jeffcoat were recognized for their 4-year contributions. Omaha got revenge in the Saturday rematch, 80-75. Denver finished 6th in conference play and will be headed to Sioux Fall, SD for the Summit League championships.

We told you about the dominating victories by men’s lacrosse and men’s hockey as well as men’s basketball ending their season at 2-19. Denver hockey retained the Gold Pan.

#10 DU gymnastics could not get by Big 12 rival Oklahoma in Norman but the Pioneers scored their highest mark of the season, 196.875, in a second-place finish.

DU skiing finished fourth in the RMISA conference championships with the NCAA championships scheduled for March 10th in New Hampshire. Expect the Pioneers to garner All-American designations in several Alpine events but injuries in the Nordic events will likely keep DU out of the National Championship hunt. Look for a preview from our own Tim Healy before the NCAA championships begin.

Finally, DU is now allowing restricted fan admittance to DU athletic events. While not back to open admissions, we are beginning to see a resumption of more fan participation and a sign of better things to come.
