Let’s face it, most Denver fans were understandably all-consumed with DU Hockey’s national title celebrations this past week. However, DU’s other spring season student-athletes continue to successfully battle on the courts and fields.

Both men’s and women’s tennis teams wrapped up their respective Summit League regular-season titles this past weekend. Women’s tennis (12-8, 7-0) won its ninth-straight regular-season championship, every season since joining the Summit League, with a win over Oral Robers on Saturday in Tulsa. Not to be outdone, the men (14-6, 5-0) finished an undefeated  2022 Summit League regular season with a win over Illinois State on Saturday afternoon at the Denver Tennis Park. And let’s not forget, this was accomplished with new coaching staffs for both programs.

The #9 DU women’s lacrosse team (13-1, 3-0) went to Washington, D.C. to face the Georgetown Hoyas on Friday afternoon at Copper Field. The game was tight with a late Georgetown rally but Denver held on to win, 14-12, and remain unbeaten in conference play. Bea Behrins and Julia Gilbert accounted for ten of Denver’s goals in the road win. Denver improved to 13-1 on the season and 3-0 in the BIG EAST as the squad stretched its winning streak to a season-long seven games. DU men’s lacrosse (7-5, 2-1) secured a win over BIG EAST cellar-dweller St. John’s at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium on Saturday’s Senior Day. The Pioneers were led by Alex Simmons’ four goals and one assist in the demolition of the Red Storm, 18-4.

It was a whirlwind week for DU hockey with the national championship celebration Tuesday evening at Magness Arena. The trophy also made its way to Campus Lounge in honor of Jim Wiste and was showcased at an Avalanche game celebration later in the week. Bobby Brink played for the Philadelphia Flyers on Tuesday night as well and earned an assist in his first game in the NHL.

2022-23 schedules are beginning to get released and it looks like DU will, of course, co-host the Ice Breaker Tournament and play Notre Dame & Maine in October before hosting Arizona State and their technicolor sweaters at Magness Arena in early December. The end of the season also marked a number of high-profile coaching openings at Michigan State, Boston University, and, of course, our favorite new-to-D1 college, Augustana. David Carle received the USCHO.com Coach of the Year and to no one’s surprise, DU finished first in the final collegiate hockey rankings – the only time this past season the Pioneers held that spot. As Carle said, “it’s best to win that big trophy that no one gets to vote on”.
