Denver Tops Texas A&M Commerce 71-61

DU men’s basketball (4-3) traveled to Commerce, Texas to face the Texas A&M Commerce Lions on Sunday. Head Coach Jeff Wulbrun played four veterans over 30 minutes each to secure the road win. Tommy Bruner led DU with 31 points; Jaxon Brenchley had 15 points, 8 rebounds; Touko Tainamo had 16 points and 9 rebounds, and Isaiah Addo-Ankrah logged 31 minutes. 

Denver had a solid first half fueled by Tommy Bruner with 14 points, leading DU to a 42-33 halftime lead. Denver only had 4 turnovers to the Lions 14 to create extra possessions and build a nine-point lead at the break. Denver shot 51.85% in the half and 33.3% from beyond the arc. (DU is 5th in the country in fewest turnovers.)

Denver’s lead melted away early in the second half when TA&MC went on a 10-2 run with a Kalen Williams bucket cutting Denver’s lead to one point at 14:42. Denver countered the Lions’ run. Tommy Bruner went on an eight-consecutive-point run to rebuild the Pioneer advantage, 56-47, with ten minutes remaining. Bruner and Tainamo scored critical buckets down the stretch to maintain the lead. Final score, 71-61.

DU’s Tommy Bruner is now the third-leading scorer in the country at 24.7 points per game. Next up for Denver is a trip to Idaho to play the Vandals Wednesday night at 7:00 pm MT.

  1. Any D-1 road win is a good win and DU was able to close out the game when it mattered. Bruner and Tuoko are proving to be DU’s barometer players – when they do well, DU does well…
