Denver Cruises Past Omaha, 2-0

Denver Men’s Soccer opened up Homecoming week with a 2-0 win over Omaha at Pioneer Field. Denver was fueled by two first-half goals and coasted in the second half, outshooting the visitors 13(5 on net)-9(3). The win snapped Denver’s two-game losing streak and moved their record to 8-2-4 (3-1-0 Summit League).

Sam Bassett got Denver on the board with a set-piece strike on a tap-pass from Jake Smith in the 17th minute. The shot was a bending bullet from the left side to put Denver up 1-0. Eight minutes later, Kyle McGowan found the ball in the box and beat the Mavs keeper Nathanael Sallah. Denver dominated the first 45 minutes, outshooting Omaha 7-2.

The second half lacked suspense as Denver held a safe two-goal advantage and seemed satisfied with the margin. The  Mavs struggled to create chances on the offensive end and the teams’ were scoreless over the final 45 minutes.

The match featured some chippy moments with three yellow cards issued to the Mavericks along with a total of 15 fouls. However, Denver seemed to take the steam out of Omaha’s attack and the match lacked the usual suspense generated when these two sides collide. Denver seemed to be the more focused team, determined to get back on the winning track.
