Denver hockey (10-0-0 – 0-0-0 NCHC) faced Lindenwood Saturday night. DU hockey alumni flocked to Magness Arena for the special occasion, celebrating 75 years of DU hockey. The two teams traded goals the first two periods, despite an obvious edge to DU in the second period, and the Pioneers and Lions entered the final period tied, 1-1.
In the third period, it was DU’s Sam Harris who bailed Denver out of a tight jam with a goal at 5:18 and followed that strike with another lamp-lighter at 11:07 to bail out Denver’s on the night.
DU alumni returned home to DU ice along with their ten championship trophies.
A roughing call on Lindenwood led to an Aiden Thompson wrister and man-up goal at 17:40 as the Pioneers put the Lions away for good, 4-1. The final score matched the Friday night score and gave DU a sweep of the weekend series.
Denver was dominant on faceoffs, 35-24 and shots-on-goal, 27-19, to remain undefeated on the season. The biggest early season challenge comes next weekend as DU travels to play North Dakota in Grand Forks for their first NCHC Conference tilt of the season.

True grit.
Good to get the sweep. This is the type of weekend with a lot of distractions, and the Pios were obviously able to play through them. This is, believe, a record start for the Pios at 10-0. Can’t really ask for more than that.
Cool to see the pics of all the alums. Hope they had fun and that they made a big impression on the current DU team.
Now it’s on to Grand Forks and the stakes are going up with DU’s first top 10 opponent and the stiffest test so far.. I’d love for DU to get a split there. UND has had a few stumbles this year, but they were dominant in Duluth last weekend.
Go Pios!
I can attest that they definitely had a good time on campus all weekend. And if you couldn’t tell from the photo, the current team stayed on the bench for the intermission ceremony. Also great seeing John Macmillan get a standing ovation during the ceremonial puck drop.
Is DU releasing a print book for the 75th anniversary? I have the 60th one and really enjoy looking at it. Quite a history of success.
AWESOME PICTURE OF #22 CAPONI. How would I go about getting an image of it that I could print? The Caponi’s would love to get it framed. Semper Fi LtCol Caponi
It was taken with an iPhone and an app. We can send you the photo if you give us an email. Thanks!
