#3 Denver Defeats #14 Indiana, 1-0, Advances to NCAA Quarterfinals

A DU Soccer Stadium record crowd of nearly 2,000 fans packed Pioneer Field for DU’s NCAA Round of 16 victory against Indiana University. Denver’s Keegan Kelly scored the game-winner on an early first-half goal (08:30) and kept the Hoosiers off the score sheet the rest of the way. Denver men’s soccer now advances to the NCAA Quarterfinal round of 8 at Pioneer Field next weekend against UMass-Amherst.

DU owned the pace of play first half as each team allowed few scoring opportunities. DU’s Keegan Kelly broke the ice, 1-0, in a scrum in front of goal. Kelly found the ball in the box, unassisted, and shot past keeper JT Harms. During the first half, IU looked for offensive buildups while DU found opportunities on the break. DU created 4 corner kicks to IU’s 3.

IU started the second half playing mostly in DU’s end. Denver played a smart, tactical final 45 minutes, pressing the ball, cutting down on the Hoosiers’ passing angles and clearing the defensive zone. The most dangerous threat generated by Indiana came at 13:27 on a shot from IU’s Jansen Miller, saved by DU keeper Isaac Nehme to maintain a clean sheet. DU defended four IU corners in the half along with two saves. While the game did not appear overly physical, DU was called for 18 fouls for 3 to the Hoosiers who seemed to fall to the ground with every contact.

DU players celebrate the win over IU

DU moves on to host the quarterfinal round against UMass-Amherst at Pioneer Field next Saturday at 1pm MT. Another DU win and the Pioneers will return to the College Cup semis for the first time since 2016.

  1. First time long time I could see the mountains on the stream. Nice recruiting tool. Dunker curious as to how many Hoosier fans were at the game? Looked like SRO

  2. Fantastic win for the DU Soccer Program, and wonderful to see the record crowd. I only wish the DU students could be part of this, but alas, it’s always going to be winter break as long as NCAA Soccer finishes in December.

Watching DU beat Indiana, the second-best NCAA program in history (as measured by total NCAA titles with eight) was special, too.

DU’s back five were the heroes today, blocking shots and playing very positional soccer for the win.

UMass will come into Denver unranked and sky-high after dumping UVA in Charlottesville. Pios need to be ready…
