Mixed Results follow DU in Summit League Play

Following a week of rest, Denver men’s soccer (5-6, 1-1) traveled to face conference mate UMass-Amherst and fell, 2-1, in a rematch of last year’s NCAA Quarterfinal matchup that DU won 3-0. The Minuement bookended goals in each half to fuel the home win. Denver had numerous chances to score with a 10-2 shots-on-goal advantage and 9-2 edge on corner kicks, but they could never capitalize. DU’s Erik Collins scored with three minutes remaining, but the die was cast. With the loss, DU falls below .500.

DU completes this East Coast road swing with a trip to D.C. to face Georgetown Tuesday night on ESPNU (5pm MT) before a matchup with Delaware and then another East Coast trip (Pitt & Virginia) next week.

Denver women’s volleyball (11-4, 3-1), in the midst of a solid start to the season, split home matches against South Dakota State and South Dakota, selected first and second, respectively, in the conference Coach’s Poll. SDSU beat DU at Hamilton 3-1 (25-20, 21-25, 27-25, 25-19). Denver had their chances; however, three Bison earned double-digit kills to erase DU’s hopes. DU’s Ava Reynolds finished with a game-high 20 kills.

Saturday afternoon was a different story when DU faced South Dakota on the Hamilton Gym floor. Denver turned the tables and won 3-1. Jamia Johnson (15 kills) and Izzy Rawlings (24 assists) led the Pioneers in the tight contest. DU trailed 20-17 in the fourth set but came storming back (25-23) for the dramatic win against the Coyotes.

Women’s soccer (6-4-3, 3-1) suffered a surprising home loss against ORU at Pioneer Field on Sunday. ORU scored off a deflected shot – that was all the Golden Eagles needed, 1-0. Denver carried play but could never take advantage of their chances. ORU remains undefeated in conference play (3-0). Next up is a visit by South Dakota State on Thursday night (7:00 pm MT) to complete the homestand.


Elsewhere, in preseason exhibition action, DU Hockey defeated UNLV in a rematch of last December’s viral shootout exhibition loss. DU opens its 2025-26 season against Air Force on Friday in Colorado Springs before hosting Bentley in the home opener on Saturday night. Both games start at 7:00 pm MT.

DU Triathlon competed in the Prairie State Cup in DeWitt, Illinois Saturday. In an impressive individual performance, DU freshman Jenna Topott earned a 3rd place podium spot. Pioneer senior captain Elizabeth Harita landed in the fifth spot, third among all DI competitors in the event. Despite not fielding a full team, DU finished eighth among the DI squads. Now, the team looks forward to the Western Regional Championships on October 26th in Fort Worth, Texas.
