RECAP: Denver Men’s Soccer Down San Francisco 2-1, Frozen Four Rematch this Weekend

Denver women’s volleyball (8-9, 1-4) played the conference-leading Loyola Marymount University Lions into extra points but fell 3 games to 2. Alicia Thibodeau paced DU with 17 kills, Lily van Hal contributed 34 assists and Madison Winkler produced 25 digs. Ultimately, it was the Lions outside hitters, (6’4″) Maria Tabacuks and (6’3″) Nicole Schuetz, who combined for 34 kills along with 19 digs from Delfina Schuh. Service aces also played a role with the Lions serving up 9 winners to only 4 for Denver. Denver, without any seniors, continues to face an experience and size deficit against their West Coast Conference peers. Next up is a trip to Portland on Thursday night to face the Pilots at 7:00 pm MT.

Denver men’s soccer (3-6-2, 2-0-1) faced San Francisco at Pioneer Field Saturday afternoon. Following a foul in the box by the Dons, Denver’s Erik Collins buried the PK to put DU up 1-0 at the 16 minute mark. Denver dominated the first half but entered the break with the narrowest of margins. Tyler Schommer gave the home team some breathing room and the game-winner at 56:01 on a feed from Erik Collins.  At 68:24, the Dons scored their first, and only, goal of the match. The final score of 2-1 left the Pioneers undefeated in conference play despite losing three key offensive players earlier in the season due to injuries – Holger Olsson, Kyle McGowan and Keegan Kelly. Jamie Franks has shored up the Denver defense in conference play and is leaning on timely scoring. Denver plays at Pioneer Stadium Saturday against the Portland Pilots at 7:00 pm MT.

Denver women’s soccer (2-8-2, 1-3-0)  traveled to San Diego and fell 3-2 to the Toreros. Denver held the lead twice, but San Diego’s Maquena O’Callaghan scored a hat trick, with the game winner at 77:11 of the match. Both of DU’s tallies came in the first half with senior Lucia Vincent scoring early and senior Liv Moritz converted a penalty shot. The game was relatively even with four more shots-on-goal by the Toreros and nine extra personal fouls by the Pioneers.  Denver returns home to play Portland Saturday at 1:00 pm at Pioneer Stadium.

#1 Denver hockey (2-0) prepare this week for an epic banner-raising hockey weekend series against #2 Michigan at Magness Arena. The 11th national title banner will be raised to the rafters before Friday night’s faceoff at 7:00 pm MT. Be sure to get to your seats early! Saturday’s game two clash begins at 6:00 pm MT.

  1. This is the biggest non-conference regular season hockey weekend in decades. Michigan has not played at DU since 1981, the last season the Wolverines were in the WCHA with DU. These are the #1 and #2 teams in the country, and raising a banner will be fun! Personally, I don’t like pre-game banner raisings, but Denver is a late-arriving crowd and the barn just won’t be as full as it will be between periods.
