WEEKLY RECAP: DU Volleyball Highlighted Challenging Week

We told you about Friday night’s hockey game and banner raising and Saturday night’s heartbreaking loss to Michigan. While a sweep was disappointing, there were some positives to take away from the series sweep. The men’s and women’s soccer teams absorbed a loss and a draw, respectively, while Denver volleyball collected a pair of impressive road wins.

DU volleyball (10-9, 3-4 WCC) secured their first road victory and followed that with another road win. The Pioneers finished off Loyola Marymount University in extra points. Denver was paced by kill leaders Kayla Patel (15), Hailey Goebel (14), and Alicia Thibodeau (14). Lily Van Hal continued her excellent play with 36 assists and 3 aces. Madison Winkler steadied the central court with 15 digs in the win. The team ventured to Seattle to sweep the Redhawks Saturday. Each of the three games were tight. Denver’s top player, Alicia Thibodeau, rose to the occasion with 13 kill, 2 aces, and 7 digs in an all-around excellent performance. Denver has some solid pieces and is young, so a road sweep is a huge confidence builder.

Denver men’s soccer (3-7-2, 2-1-2) fell to conference-leading Portland on the road 3-2. Denver, short of front-line players, could only generate 3 shots-on-goal to 10 for the Pilots. DU’s Erik Collins knotted the contest 2-2 at the 61-minute mark, but the Pilots scored less than 30 seconds later to seal DU’s fate. Denver needs to tighten up on the defensive end with a paltry 1.08 goals per game.

Denver women’s soccer (2-8-3, 1-3-1) forged a disappointing draw against Portland at Pioneer Field Saturday. DU had trouble connecting passes and broke down in the final third of the field on numerous occasions. DU could not finish their four shots on frame while the Pilots hit the Denver post several times on 8 shots, 2 on frame. The tie was yet another poor result in a sport that has been one of Denver’s best in the past.

Women’s Triathlon finished 5th at the 2026 Western Regional Championships, behind Arizona, Arizona State, TCU and San Francisco. The bright spot for DU was former national champion Maira Carreau, who finished third. Still, outside of Carreau, Denver needs to recruit and develop a deeper squad if they want to compete for a spot on the team podium at nationals. Next up are the Collegiate National Championships on Sunday, Nov. 8 at Tempe Town Lake in Tempe, Arizona.
