The New Jersey Devils announced today that they have officially signed 2017 Hobey Baker Award winner and former University of Denver captain Will Butcher to a two-year entry-level contract. Butcher’s signing officially ends a drawn-out saga that saw the Colorado Avalanche, the team that drafted him in the fifth round of the 2013 NHL Draft, lose out on the prized defenseman prospect. Will Butcher to wait until August to sign NHL deal, will test free agency

Our friends at BSN Denver have reported that 2017 Hobey Baker Award winner Will Butcher has decided to wait until August 15th, when he becomes an unrestricted free agent, to sign with an NHL team. DU’s prized defenseman and captain for the 2016-17 National Championship winning team was drafted by Denver’s own Colorado Avalanche in the fifth round of the 2013 NHL Draft. Lukosevicius and Jaillet shine as Denver wins eighth National Title

CHICAGO – They did it. The University of Denver Pioneers are back on top of the college hockey world. Sophomore forward Jarid Lukosevicius scored a second period hat trick and junior goalie Tanner Jaillet made 38 saves as the Pioneers beat the Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs 3-2 in the National Championship Game at the United Center. Will Butcher wins Hobey Baker, named 2017 national player of the year

CHICAGO – Will Butcher has been named the recipient of the 2017 Hobey Baker Memorial Award as college hockey’s national player of the year. Butcher becomes the University of Denver’s second Hobey Baker Award recipient. Matt Carle won the award as a defenseman in 2006. Denver drops close defensive battle to North Dakota in Frozen Faceoff semifinal

There’s always one constant anytime the top-ranked University of Denver Pioneers and the North Dakota Fighting Hawks take the ice together: it’s going to be a close game. Tonight’s game between the two teams at the Frozen Faceoff in Minneapolis was no different as the Fighting Hawks skated out of the building with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over the Pioneers. If you want to get a University of Denver hockey player’s blood boiling and heart pumping, all you have to do is mention North Dakota. The rivalry between the Pioneers and the Fighting Hawks goes back decades and there’s no love lost between the two programs. From conference tournament matchups to national seminfinal and title games, the hatred has festered and the fireworks fly every time the two programs take the ice. Pioneers ruin Omaha’s Senior Night with shutout to cap regular season

The top-ranked University of Denver Pioneers went into Omaha this weekend with one goal on their minds: clinch the Penrose Cup and bring the huge trophy back to Denver with them. After they clinched the NCHC regular season title last night with a 4-2 victory (and UMD’s loss to Western Michigan) over the Omaha Mavericks, the focus tonight shifted to ruining the Mavs’ Senior Night. Nine seniors will don the Crimson and Gold for their last regular season series at Magness Arena this weekend. The top-ranked University of Denver Pioneers (22-6-4, 14-3-3-2 NCHC) host the No. 18 St. Cloud State Huskies (15-14-1, 9-10-1-0 NCHC) who handed DU its most recent loss (3-2) on Jan. 20.
