DU Surrenders Late Goal in 2-2 Draw at Washington

#4 Denver held a late 2-1 lead in Seattle but Washington solved Denver in the final five minutes to eke out a 2-2 tie with the Pioneers Thursday night. The tie kept DU unblemished at the midway point of their six-game opening season road trip.

Sam Bassett put DU (2-0-1) up over the Huskies at 22:23 of the first half when he tucked a nifty shot into the right corner of the cage. The Pioneer lead held through halftime.

In the second half, Washington knotted the score 1-1 at 62:24 when the Huskies Harrison Bertos slipped a goal into the cage past keeper Isaac Nehmi. Following three straight Washington yellow cards (four in all) seventeen minutes into the second half, DU’s Ronan Wynne fed Oje Ofunrein who appeared to deliverthe game- winner at 80:23. Five minutes later, Washington countered to pull even 2-2 on a goal by Egor Akulov. Akulov’s goal ended the scoring on the night as the teams fought to a draw.

For the night, DU was outshot 8-6 on the night and faced 10 corner kicks to only two of their own. Denver remains unbeaten against Power Four teams to start the season. Next up is a trip to Dallas to face SMU on Sunday at 5:00 pm MT.

  1. Great start. I have seen this kind of season before. One ended up in an amazing appearance in the final four. One of best accomplishments in recent DU sports history. I have also seen inconsistent seasons. I would be happy if DU goes into the NCAA tournament ranked in the top 15. Good luck!
