This past weekend, DU Women’s Lacrosse (12-1, 10-0) celebrated senior day and swept Villanova 18-10 and 19-9 to complete an undefeated BIG EAST regular season 10-0. The Pioneers will advance to the conference tournament as the #1 seed. But before then, they will have the opportunity to avenge their only loss of the season this Thursday at Peter Barton Stadium against the CU Buffs in non-conference play. Conference Championships Highlight DU’s Weekend
Over this past weekend, DU earned two NCAA Tournament soccer berths, one by the old-fashioned way and the other via a COVID shortened season. Also, Denver women’s swimming won the Summit League in Fargo, North Dakota. First place women’s and men’s lacrosse teams experienced overtime highs and lows on road trips but both remain in first place in the BIG EAST. Like all Pioneer fans, it has been weird not seeing DU hockey in the NCAA Tournament over the past couple of weeks but DU did have yet another undefeated weekend in spring sports. There were plenty of big wins this past weekend and still lots of excitement remaining in this academic year. Weekend Update: Heartbreak and Hope
It was a bittersweet several days for DU athletes and fans this week as Denver competed in season-ending competitions which, ultimately, were decided in their opponents’ favor. This is a reminder to all of us why athletic competitions can provide great exhilaration as well as gut-wrenching disappointment which oftentimes hinge on a single moment. In each case, Denver was positioned for success but came up just short.
Weekend Update: Pioneers Rack Up Wins
Both of DU’s lacrosse teams remain undefeated in Big East play with three more wins. DU’s women’s soccer and volleyball cemented regular season Summit League Championships. Men’s and women’s tennis won their weekend tilts and DU golfers heated up courses out west during non-conference play. Gymnastics is still in play for a national championship. Sometimes we take all this for granted but Denver teams keep piling up spring wins with a combined record of 61-16-1.
Wintry Weekend Update: Games Played & Postponed
Some games were played this past weekend while others were canceled or postponed as a heavy, wet spring storm rolled into Denver. The men’s lacrosse game against #4 Georgetown on Saturday at Peter Barton Stadium was moved to tomorrow afternoon. Women’s volleyball took to the court Friday evening at Hamilton Gym against South Dakota but their second match, scheduled for Saturday, was postponed. NCAA Officially Grants Blanket Eligibility Waiver for Spring Athletes
Senior lacrosse star Ethan Walker has an extra year of eligibility. Junior women’s lacrosse star Quintin Hoch-Bullen now has two years of eligibility. Freshman women’s golf star Anna Zanusso – the same Anna Zanusso who carded an NCAA record 61 earlier this year – gets a full 4-year do-over. Yesterday, the NCAA Executive Council approved an extra year of eligibility for all spring NCAA Division I and II athletes. In the case of the University of Denver, this includes the men’s and women’s lacrosse, tennis, and golf.

The last two days have felt like a decade. Every five minutes, the news cycle delivered a new body blow and the bad news flowed flowing like the dang Colorado River. On Wednesday afternoon, the NCAA delivered the news that fans would not be permitted to attend any winter sports championships including March Madness and the NCAA Hockey Tournament. This news, of course, was followed up by the NBA suspending its season Wednesday night after Rudy Gobert of the Utah Jazz tested positive for the coronavirus, better known to some as COVID-19.
