Less than two months after the return of full-capacity crowds at Denver-area sporting events, the rise of the COVID-19 Delta variant has caused the return of certain restrictions to Denver area arenas and stadiums.

Citing new evidence that vaccinated Americans with breakthrough infections can carry as much coronavirus as unvaccinated people do, though the effects in vaccinated people generally remain much less serious, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention last month urged residents of high-transmission areas to wear masks in public indoor spaces, regardless of vaccination status.

It’s beginning to look like the upcoming academic year and athletic sporting events may begin imposing various COVID-19 restrictions to address new, potentially more aggressive COVID-19 variants.

The University of Denver already requires masks to be worn at the Coors Fitness Center but as of August 31, outdoor events – men’s and women’s soccer – do not yet have any restrictions in place. However, before venue entry, soccer match attendees are asked to review a list of COVID symptoms and confirm that they are not experiencing any of the side effects of the disease.  Unvaccinated fans are required to wear masks, though proof of vaccination is not required at this point.

As for volleyball and other indoor public events, DU has a campus policy that sets indoor limits where masks must be worn. The Denver Pioneer Website added this banner today requiring face coverings except when eating or drinking:

Their first home match of the season is scheduled for Thursday evening in Hamilton Gym.

Empower Field at Mile High will allow full-capacity crowds for Broncos games this season, and people will not for the moment be required to wear masks regardless of their vaccination status, the team announced Monday. However, fans who are not vaccinated against COVID-19 will be “strongly encouraged” to wear a mask and added that the rules are subject to change based on local and league protocols.

Many local retailers are urging customers to wear masks, especially when not vaccinated. Otherwise, most Denver area restaurants and retail locations and operating as normal.

Currently, the University of Denver Athletic Department is working closely with University Officials and following local health guidelines to determine the next steps, especially for indoor events.

This could all change in an instant, though, as COVID-19 cases continue to rise in Denver across the state. We will keep you updated as things inevitably change.
