Denver Boone Makes Epic Comeback

What a long strange trip its been. Grateful Dead

In a prior article we told you about the unusual, coincidental discovery of an early Denver Boone costume head, likely from the 1990s. (And yes, Doug Hirsh was the first Boone in 1968, need we be reminded? Hirsh did not wear a mascot head. He did, however, don a coonskin cap and frontier clothes.)

The mascot head was in need of serious repair.

As you may recall, LetsGoDU founder Damien Goddard accidentally met a Lamont School of Music student at The Pioneer Bar (of course) on a trip to Denver several years ago. Goddard asked the lone student who was having a beer by himself to come join us. After some light conversation, the student stated that he had an old, vintage Boone head in his apartment. The student went to his apartment, got the Boone head and gifted the head to Goddard at The Pioneer. However, the story does not end there.

The head was in terrible shape, covered in grime and tears, and in need of serious repair.  We sent the damaged piece in for repair at Looney Times over a year ago. Looney Times specializes in mascot repair. We were quickly informed by Looney Times that the head could not be repaired and they could either return it or throw it away. At that point, we lost track of good old Boone as well as a piece of DU athletics history.

The vintage Boone mascot was deemed too damaged to repair.

Fast forward to the Frozen Four NCAA hockey Tournament in Las Vegas and the semifinal game between Michigan and DU. An email was received during the game that the vintage Boone head was fully repaired and ready to be returned to us along with a picture of the new and improved Boone. We passed the email note among each other as the two teams plunged into double overtime, wondering if this was a prank. But, it was true, Boone had been transformed.

Looney Times kept the vintages materials and design while updating the character for future use.

The restored Boone head was returned to Denver this week for future use, display and safe keeping.  The return of Denver Boone seems like it was meant to be. Perhaps his remake is a harbinger of good things to come. We are still reviewing options for the historical piece but pleased to restore the mascot head back to its former glory.

  1. I have never understood DU’s rejection of Boone and it’s complete inability to deliver a new mascot. Dithering, pandering, and bumbling ineptitude at the senior level.
