It was a wild day of racing in Utah today and Denver responded with a solid day to open the 2022 NCAA Championships.
It was 18 degrees and partly sunny at Park City mountain resorts today with 10 to 15 mph winds. Ideal weather, if a bit breezy, for day one. The teams had four events scheduled on the day with men’s and women’s classical as well as giant slalom (GS) events for both the men and women. I can’t believe it’s here already – the NCAA Skiing Championships in Park City Mountain Resort in Park City and Soldier Hollow Nordic Center in Midway, Utah. The competition begins tomorrow – Giant Slalom was moved from today to tomorrow due to slope conditions – through March 12th and I expect our Denver Pioneers to be in the thick of it – even though they will be in rival Utah’s territory! This week saw the start of the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing. The Denver Pioneers are well represented in multiple sports. The first sport to see a Pioneer in action was Alpine Skiing and the Men’s Super-G on Monday. Denver Alum Trevor Phillip (’15) of Team Canada powered through the challenging course to a top-10 finish. This was Trevor’s 3rd Olympic Games, having competed in Sochi 2014 & PyeongChang 2018 games. Head Coach Barbara Perkins was named the University of Denver’s first triathlon head coach in program history for the abbreviated 2020 season and recently completed her second full season by guiding DU Triathletes to an exciting fourth-place finish at this season’s NCAA Nationals. We asked Coach Perkins about this past season and her thoughts about the future of DU Triathlon.
