Denver Men’s Soccer Defeats Tulsa for First Win, 3-0

Denver men’s soccer (1-3-1) faced Tulsa Saturday night following a three game road skid. A packed Pioneer Field saw Denver secure their first win of the season, dominating both ends of the field in the win.

Midfielder sophomore Hudson Tate got DU on the board early (2:39), 1-0, on a shot into the upper right corner of the cage. Denver created numerous scoring chances in the half but failed to dent Tulsa keeper, Carlito Saylon. DU’s Bryce Willoughby had several fast break opportunities but was thwarted by Saylon on both of his fast break chances. Tulsa created several dangerous scoring chances in the first 45 minutes but DU goalie Alex Hohl kept the Golden Hurricane off the board.

Denver controlled the first 15 minutes of the second half. Finally, on a set piece from the corner, DU’s Eric Collins headed the ball into the Golden Hurricane goal, 2-0. A little more than a minute later, Bryce Willoughby received a feed from Ethan Orchard in the box. Willoughby settled the pass, spun and tucked the ball to the left of Saylon, 3-0. Denver controlled the pace of play the rest of the match, missing several grade ‘A’ scoring chances on 8 shots, 3 on goal, in the second half.

Freshman Ethan Orchard, former Gatorade Colorado Player of the Year, had a strong second half while creating scoring chances for the Pioneers. DU freshman goalie Alex Hohl earned his first win and first clean sheet.

Next up is a trip to Bloomington, Indiana to play Big 10 soccer power IU on Monday (Labor Day) at 6:00 pm MT.
