The Denver Pioneers have now gone 15 games unbeaten with their 4-3 win over the Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs on Friday night. Through that stretch they’ve had injuries to players such as Dylan Gambrell, Evan Janssen and Emil Romig but that never seemed to affect the Pioneers. It’s about that next man up mentality. Tonight it was Henrik Borgström who was out of the lineup with an illness, but, just like the other injuries, the Pioneers didn’t seem to be fazed tonight. Rivalries make sports great. They’re the games that every fan circles on the calendar and makes sure they have a ticket to. The only thing better than a rivalry in sports is a college rivalry. When most people think of a rivalry they usually think of the Michigan-Ohio State, CU-CSU (at least around here), USC-UCLA, Duke-North Carolina and so on. Maybe it’s due to the pride and tradition that each school has built, but it always seems like college sports take rivalries to a whole new level. The University of Denver Pioneers were able to sweep the Western Michigan Broncos on Saturday night and get their sixth win in a row. Heading into the game the Pioneers were a dismal 4-for-36 (11.1) on the power play so they weren’t looking to play a ‘special team game’. But it would turn into a special team game as the officials called a total of 17 penalties. Their fortunes would change as the Pioneers would end up going 3-for-9 on the power play in this one, and that’d be the story of the game. The #3 University of Denver Pioneers will be opening up conference play this weekend at home against the Western Michigan University Broncos. The Pioneers tend to start playing better as they get into the NCHC gauntlet, and the Broncos are a great early test to maintain that trend.
