Just when we thought university athletics were getting too professionalized, they go a step further. With the blessing of the NCAA, the University of Utah is creating Utah Brands & Entertainment, a company to oversee its major revenue sources. Otro Capital (a private equity firm) would be the minority owner of for-profit Utah Brands, which will manage operations such as ticket sales, media, stadium events, concessions, and trademark and licensing matters. All this while many universities, especially those in the Power Four conferences, are sharing $20+ million of current department revenue with their student-athletes on top of declining media revenue and soaring operating costs. Defense Evades Pioneers in Loss to Idaho State University, 93-79
DU men’s basketball (3-6) travelled to Pocatello, Idaho, and played the Idaho State University Bengals (6-4) on Saturday afternoon. The Pioneers can certainly score points. However, their leaky defense continues to be surprisingly poor. Idaho State had its highest scoring output of the season in the game. Denver could not get stops against the Bengals in the disappointing 93-79 loss. It is no longer just a size issue for Denver, either. Idaho’s three leading scorers were guards. The game was a step backwards as Denver fell to #350 out of #361 NCAA DI teams in defense, allowing 87.4 points per game. Bergstraser Leads Denver Over Monson and Eastern Washington, 93-89
This game featured two similar teams, both struggling to define their identity and stack wins. The Eastern Washington Eagles were 1-6 and DU 2-5 heading into the game at Hamilton Gym on Wednesday night. The Eagles were led by Don Monson with 445 DI wins, 9 NIT’s, 4 NCAA Tournaments and 4 Coach of the Year honors. On paper, it looked like a coaching mismatch but Tim Bergstraser matched Monson and seized the win down the stretch, his third coaching victory of the young season. Wyoming Thrashes Denver in Laramie, 101-59
Wednesday evening, the Denver Pioneers men’s basketball (2-) traveled to Laramie, Wyoming to face the University of Wyoming Cowboys (6-1). Denver trailed by 10 points at halftime but faded dramatically in the second half, eventually falling by 42 points. The Cowboys operated in the paint, scoring 52 of their 101 points and were +13 on rebounds while shooting a sizzling 56.1%. The margin of defeat against Wyoming was the worst in 160 meetings between the two teams. Continue reading Wyoming Thrashes Denver in Laramie, 101-59
Arizona Powers Past Stubborn Denver, 103-73
Monday night, DU men’s basketball traveled to Tucson, Arizona to take on the 5-0 #2 Arizona Wildcats. This game followed a signature program win at undefeated Colorado State’s Moby Arena. Arizona proved to be a much tougher opponent at McKale Memorial Center. The Wildcats talent and athleticism were on full display in the 103-73 victory over Denver. Surprisingly, in a sign of toughness, resilience and fight, Denver only trailed the Wildcats’ scoring by two points in the second half. Continue reading Arizona Powers Past Stubborn Denver, 103-73
Denver Shocks CSU in Fort Collins, 83-81
Denver men’s basketball (2-3) ventured 68 miles north on I-25 to face the CSU Rams at Moby Arena. The Rams were 4-0, and DU was looking to get on the winning track following a disappointing loss in their home opener. Denver took an eight-point lead at halftime. However, it was a tough, savvy final ten minutes of play when the Pioneers displayed their mettle and put down the Rams 83-81. Continue reading Denver Shocks CSU in Fort Collins, 83-81
Big Changes Ahead for College Soccer with Split Season and More
In 2020, we wrote about a proposal discussed by an NCAA soccer committee to reduce the college soccer regular-season schedule – for both the men and women – from 25 to 23 total matches but would expand the campaign across the entire school year – i.e. fall and spring. In 2023, we wrote that the NCAA rejected the idea, despite the support of NCAA soccer head coaches. Well, it has been a contentious five years with coaches battling administrators but it looks like the dam has finally broken. With the advent of NIL and the desire to grow soccer and support player safety, it appears that this concept is a likelyhood, as soon as the 2026-27 season for men’s soccer. Women’s soccer is taking a wait-and-see approach. Continue reading Big Changes Ahead for College Soccer with Split Season and More
Defense Betrays Denver in 84-79 loss to the University of Texas San Antonio
Denver men’s basketball (1-3) opened at Hamilton Gym Saturday afternoon after a three-game road trip. Head Coach Tim Bergstraser was looking to secure his first home court victory against the visiting Roadrunners. It didn’t happen in a game of ‘what could have been’, DU gave up 50% shooting and only had two players in double digits, Carson Johnson (29) and Jeremiah Burke (23). DU had trouble making stops and became too one-dimensional in the 84-79 loss. Continue reading Defense Betrays Denver in 84-79 loss to the University of Texas San Antonio
Summit Recap: DU Men’s Soccer Finds Scoring Touch, Women’s Teams Struggle
DU Men’s Soccer entered the Summit League Tournament defending well but struggling to score goals. Denver failed to score more than two goals in a match the entire season. It looked like a repeat on Sunday when DU trailed #4 seed Oral Roberts 1-0 on a late first-half goal by the Golden Eagles’ Jeff Mesidor (penalty kick). The scoreless drought carried over 16 minutes into the second half as the playoff crowd implored the Pioneers to push forward more aggressively. Denver started to play on the Golden Eagles’ side of the field. Bryce Willoughby delivered a goal on a corner kick from Trevor Wright, 1-1. A minute and a half later, a running Keegan Kelly directed a header into the cage, 2-1, DU. Denver started to play out of the back and isolate the ORU defenders. Keegan Kelly struck again, twenty minutes after his first goal, on a target from distance, 3-1. Two minutes later, Kelly made it a three-goal barrage with a close-in tally, 4-1.
