While most DU students are still preparing for fall classes, DU has already taken to the courts and the fields.

Shock and Awe

The DU men’s soccer team hit the road Friday night and stunned Monmouth with a goal from junior transfer Graham Smith in the 89th minute to tie the score 1-1, resulting in a draw to open the regular season. The men then went up the road Sunday to play Big 10 Rutgers in Piscataway, New Jersey. All they needed was a first half goal by Alex Underwood to hold off the Scarlet Knights 1-0 and move to 1-0-1.

Of course, the highlight of the Jersey road trip had to go to All-American Reagan Dunk who had the opportunity to meet super-fan Dunker, his namesake.

Fantastic Finish

Women’s volleyball traveled to the Aztec invitational in San Diego. They were soundly beaten 3-0 by Michigan State and had a daunting Saturday doubleheader against Marist and tournament host San Diego State. Instead of a letdown, they pounded Marist 3-0 and then it took all 5 sets to dispatch the host Aztecs in a great early season gut-check match. 2-1 for the season and a very solid start.

GOOOOOAL!

DU women’s soccer earned a split and two goals. In game one, DU got first goals by  Lilly McSwain and Leah Swander to slip by SIU-Edwardsville, 2-1. These goals, fortunately, halted a 2-game regular season scoring drought.

On Sunday, women’s soccer faced an excellent Montana Griz squad at CIBER Field and were outplayed in a 1-0 loss. The Pioneers had a tough first half but had some solid chances to even the score in the second half.
