In the Deloitte 2022 Outlook on Sports, the public accounting and consulting firm looked at future trends in sports and reinforces many of the topics we have covered this past year. When summarizing the current trends in collegiate athletics, the overarching conclusion of the study warns of the “impacts of conference realignment and NCAA constitutional changes on smaller athletic programs.” Specifically, student-athlete Name, Image and Likeness (NIL) legislation along with spiraling costs to keep up with the Power-5 conference spending. The side-effects of these trends include the probable elimination of automatic conference berths and unlimited scholarships and liberalized transfer rules as just a few of the threats to mid-major programs going forward. Would Duke ever abandon its name on uniform for its initials — ‘D.U.’ ?
Our recent story about the DU administration’s overall branding decision to perhaps move away from the full “Denver” name on sports jerseys in favor of a new logo with an abbreviated “DU” has clearly touched some nerves, so we thought we’d share a deeper dive on the subject, comparing this strategy to other universities.
Rather than going through the jersey branding for every team in the country, we examined the current top 10 hockey programs, the top 10 lacrosse programs, the top 10 basketball programs, the Summit League members, and ten metro/urban universities to better understand jersey branding practices.
What did we find?

Former University of Minnesota Duluth Athletic Director Josh Berlo was officially introduced as the University of Denver’s new AD at a press conference in the Gottesfeld Room at the Ritchie Center Thursday morning. The University of Denver has reached out to a familiar hockey face to lead the Pioneer Athletic Department and named Josh Berlo as its new Vice-Chancellor for Athletics and Ritchie Center Operations. The announcement will be made this morning at 10:45 at Ritchie Center on the DU campus. Berlo has been the University of Minnesota-Duluth’s Athletic Director since 2013 and had just signed a three-year contract extension at UMD just a couple of weeks ago. There are many worthy causes at DU including the beautiful new James C. Kennedy mountain campus, the Chancellor’s Priority Fund, the Learning Effectiveness Program, and Summer Internship Award Programs among others. When it comes to Denver Athletics this year, nearly every program is worthy of notice. Hockey is the shining star, boasting their ninth NCAA championship trophy and, oftentimes, we take for granted that they generally do not need our financial help. They are 30-3 over the past two seasons and their 16-8 road win at Villanova this past weekend guaranteed DU women’s lacrosse at least a share of the conference title – yet again. That now makes it three straight regular-season titles (2020 was canceled due to COVID-19). Sitting at #9 in the national rankings, Denver women’s lacrosse is on a tear, sitting at 14-1, 4-0 this season. They have outscored their opponents 196-118 and take 11 more shots per game. While the entire Pioneer Nation comes down off of the hockey Championship high, the DU gymnastics season fizzled out with our sole National Championship qualifier, Abbie Thompson, not competing in Fort Worth, assumingly due to injury. The season started with incredibly high hopes of, perhaps, a national championship for the first time ever from an all-women’s team at DU. It was just not to be.
