Shinyashiki’s OT Goal Extends Denver’s Unbeaten Streak to 32

Striking in extra time, sophomore forward Andre Shinyashiki secured the 2-1 victory for the University of Denver men’s soccer team over New Mexico. The win extended the Pioneers’ regular season unbeaten streak to 32 consecutive games and a current record of 13-0-2.

Recently No. 3-ranked by College Soccer News, Denver continued to assert its success on the national platform. With eight seconds remaining in the second overtime, redshirt-senior midfielder Karsten Hanlin sent a corner kick into the box. The cross was headed by a New Mexico defender and redirected by Shinyashiki to net the game-winner.

Denver was the first to get on the scoreboard following a scoreless first half. Hanlin struck a one-timer past New Mexico’s goalie off of a cross sent by sophomore Kenny Akamatsu from the right flank. Hanlin’s delayed run behind Shinyashiki timed the cross precisely to create the conversion during the 52nd minute.

With one minute remaining in regulation, New Mexico’s Nicholas Rochowski equalized the score. A shot taken by New Mexico outside of the penalty area created chaos in front of net leaving a loose ball open for Rochowski to finish, sending the game to extra time.

Denver returns to Summit League play on Saturday, Oct. 22 at 7 p.m. The Pioneers host Oral Roberts.

College Athletic Free Agency a Potential Plus for DU

An undergraduate football player (former Northern Illinois punter Peter Deppe) has filed a lawsuit challenging the NCAA rule that requires an undergraduate transfer to fulfill a one-year residence requirement at the institution he transfers to before he is eligible to compete. The case is expected to be heard early in 2017. Of course, the NCAA is prepared to vigorously defend the present NCAA status quo which tips the balance in the favor of the institutions and not the best interest of the athletes. In a crazy process initiated by University of North Dakota President Mark Kennedy, an 18-member committee was formed largely of non-athletic department staff to examine UND’s conference affiliation and the number of athletic teams it sponsors. The purpose of the group was to identify athletic department savings to bridge a $1.4 million dollar shortfall. The common thought was that UND would eliminate 2-4 athletic programs. The committee convened a public hearing, called “pointless” and “demeaning” by the Grand Forks Herald, of coaches and teams who were asked to plead for their survival. The committee revealed their recommendation Tuesday. Continue reading North Dakota Firing Squad Shoots Blanks

DU Homecoming Weekend Sets the Standard

The unseasonably warm weather didn’t hurt. The fact that DU athletes owned the weekend didn’t hurt either. But DU’s Homecoming Weekend was a masterful event with food, events, and sports for DU family, friends, and alumni. It showed what DU can be when all the DU pieces are put together, showcased and celebrated. Continue reading DU Homecoming Weekend Sets the Standard

Borgström’s two goals lift Pioneers to sweep of Terriers

How “sweep” it is for the soon-to-be-higher than 10th-ranked University of Denver Pioneers. Thanks to a clutch 3-1 victory, the Pioneers, who many had feared would come out of the weekend looking at a scary 0-4 record, swept arguably the best team in the country in the #2 Boston University Terriers. WATCH: Jim Montgomery talks first win of the season

Last night, the #10 University of Denver Pioneers survived a late rally by the #2 Boston University Terriers to win 4-3 and notch their first victory of the season. AT 1-2, the Pios are hardly satisfied with where they’re sitting, but a victory over one of the best teams in the country to get in the win column is a big W and can help build confidence. Janssen’s second period goals send Denver past BU

Two second period goals at the hands of senior forward Evan Janssen secured the 4-3 victory for the University of Denver over Boston University on Friday, Oct. 14. The No. 10-ranked Denver Pioneers never trailed the game as they silenced the No. 2-ranked Boston Terriers.

The absence of Dylan Gambrell suffering an upper-body injury and estimated to be out for four-six weeks provided the opportunity for Denver’s forwards to step up.

The Pioneers’ third line consisting of Evan Janssen, Tyson McLellan, Logan O’Connor line delivered half of DU’s four tallies. “That Janssen line with McLellan and O’Connor was special tonight. I couldn’t get them out there enough,” said coach Jim Montgomery.

4:44 into the second period, Janssen finished on the doorstep off a feed from linemate Logan O’Connor to extend Denver’s lead 3-0.

Just over the halfway mark of the period, BU added its first tally on a power play goal buried by Calgary Flames prospect Brandon Hickey. Hickey bounced the puck past Jaillet of a feed from Jakob Karlsson.

At 12:06 remaining in the middle frame, freshman Tyson McLellan centered the puck across the slot to Janssen. Janssen sent his wrist shot past Oettinger to extend the Pioneers’ lead 4-1.

Denver lost momentum in the final frame, but never relinquished its lead. 2:47 into the period, the Terriers cut their deficit in half. 8:01 later, Doyle Somerby was assessed for holding, delivering Denver’s seventh power play of the evening. Arizona Coyotes prospect Clayton Keller picked up a loose puck and scored BU’s third goal on a shorthanded breakaway.

Boston’s physicality and overbearing intensity backfired as the Terriers served 14 penalty minutes and allowed the Pioneers to gain momentum on their powerplays.

Denver’s first goal was scored on the third power play of the night as BU’s Dante Fabbro was assessed with interference. 16 seconds in, Jarid Lukosevicus fed senior captain Will Butcher at the point. Butcher fired a wrist shot which senior center Matt Marcinew tipped bar down past Oettinger to put the Pioneers on the board first.

The Pioneers’ second conversion was finished by Anaheim Ducks prospect Troy Terry. 4:02 into the second period, Terry drove into the slot and shot a wrist shot past Oettinger on the weak side. Freshman defenseman Michael Davies picked up the assist.

Janssen’s two goals amassed to a four points recorded against BU in the past year. In the first round of the NCAA Tournament Denver demolished the Terriers 7-2, where Janssen had a goal and an assist.

Denver returns tomorrow night for the second game of the series against the Terriers in Magness Arena. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m.
