In an announcement today, “The Summit League’s Presidents Council agreed to delay the start of fall sports for member institutions until Sept. 23 based upon the recommendation from the League’s Joint Council due to the COVID-19 pandemic.” The statement went on to state that the Council would continue to be “flexible in an ever-changing environment”.
As for DU athletics, the delay will result in a conference-only schedule for the sports of women’s soccer, men’s soccer and volleyball. Competitive schedules for men’s and women’s men’s and women’s golf and men’s and women’s tennis will also be delayed until September 23. If there is a 2020-2021 NCAA Men’s Hockey season, the Denver Pioneers now know exactly who will be taking the ice at Magness Arena. This morning, the program announced that it has finalized its nine-player incoming class comprised of seven incoming freshmen and two graduate transfers. While the Power 5 conferences (PAC-12, Big 10, Big 12, SEC, ACC) remain steadfast in fall sports, many other smaller conferences have decided to cancel, postpone or push their fall sports into the winter or spring. If DU was to make such a move, men’s and women’s soccer and volleyball would be the most impacted by such a move. Joy Burns, President and CEO of the D.C. Burns Realty and Trust Company and the owner of the former Burnsley Hotel, passed away from a prolonged illness at age 92. Burns was one of the most dynamic contributors of the University of Denver for over 30 years. Originally from Houston, Texas, Burns was married to Frank L. Burns for 39 years. It won’t begin until next year, but the St. Thomas Tommies will be officially joining the Summit League for the 2021-2022 season. The NCAA notified the University of St. Thomas Wednesday that it will officially become the 10th member of The Summit League. The NCAA Division I Council made the unconventional call to provided the Tommies with a waiver to make the jump from DIII to DI. We reported recently here about DU’s new brand survey, which includes a question probing the favorability of the term ‘Pioneers’ as it relates to DU. While our sources indicate DU initially only sent this survey out to 5,000 alumni, the DU Advancement Office has indicated that other voices are acceptable to take the survey, so we’ve included the link below. The University of Denver is testing favorability of the term “Pioneers” as part of a 2020 brand reputation study.
This is believed to be the very first time that the University has included its own 95-year-old nickname as part of brand testing. It is also interesting that this testing is being carried out in the summer months, during a pandemic and during a time of racial conflict in the country. It’s also not clear who is receiving the survey. Some DU alumni have received it while others have not, and we’re not yet clear on what other audiences are being surveyed as well.
