A rowdy, pro-Canadian crowd greeted the Americans at the Canadian Tire Center in Ottawa. The USA faced Canada in the final game of Group A play. It was the Troy Augustine show in goal (stopping 38 of 39 shots), a plethora of Canadian penalties and timely scoring by the USA to seal the 4-1 game. Greetings from the World Juniors in Ottawa
OTTAWA — For the true hockey fan, there is nothing like attending the World Junior Hockey Championships. Oh sure, there are some better ice hockey tournaments to attend, such as the Winter Olympics, where the very best players in the world face each other (when the NHL allows it), the Stanley Cup playoffs, where the very best NHL teams face off and of course, for us Pioneer fans, the NCAA Frozen Four, where the top college teams grapple for national glory. The USA started its Group A competition against Germany in Preliminary Play on Thursday afternoon at the Canadian Tire Centre in Ottawa. UMass-Amherst to Join Summit League as Men’s Soccer Affiliate
No, this is not an April Fool’s joke just before Christmas.
The UMass-Amherst Minutemen are joining the Summit League as affiliate members for men’s soccer beginning in 2025. The new, weird union will partner UMass-Amherst with the University of Delaware Fightin’ Blue Hens as the Summit League’s newest affiliate members. The ‘Flagship’ Minutemen were members of the 14-team Atlantic 10 Conference. Why would they leave a geographically logical conference for the Summit League? We can only speculate that A-10 conference members care for the Minutemen as much as we do. Continue reading UMass-Amherst to Join Summit League as Men’s Soccer Affiliate
Shorthanded DU Comes Up Short Against Northern Colorado, 82-75
DU dropped a nonconference game Saturday afternoon at Hamilton Gym against the Northern Colorado Bears and fell to 6-9. Ironically, Denver fans are witnessing, perhaps, the best young backcourt in the history of Denver men’s basketball, spearheaded by transfer Nicholas Shogbonyo (15.1 ppg., 4.9 rbs.), sophomore DeAndre Craig (13.2 ppg., 3.3 rebs.) and freshmen Sebastian Akins (12.3 ppg., 2.3 rebs.). Since DU is absent a true low-post defender, DU was outscored 40-14 in the paint and committed 29 fouls trying to keep the Bears on the perimeter. Still, Denver stayed in contact, trailing by one point with a little more than a minute remaining but the Bears finally pulled away for the win, 82-75.
