DU women’s volleyball (10-3, 2-0) swept two matches to open Summit League conference play. Thursday, the team played Oral Roberts in Tulsa and carved out a 3-0 sweep behind outside hitter Ava Reynolds. On Saturday, DU returned home against UMKC. DU played a dominant first set, came from behind in the second, lost the third, and dominated the Roos in the fourth set. Jamia Johnson led DU with 17 kills to cap the opening sweep.
DU men’s soccer (5-5, 1-0) opened conference play Saturday night at Pioneer Field. The malaise from Monday’s non-conference 3-0 loss to Seattle seemed to carry over to the first half. Keeper Isaac Nehme kept DU in the match with a handful of spectacular saves in the first half. DU finally shook off the cobwebs when the Pioneers’ Luke Schultz found Bryce Willoughby and paydirt, 1-0. Ian Welch, following several point-blank scoring opportunities during the match, found the back of the net in the seventeenth minute of the second half, 2-0. The Roos got a last-second goal to spoil Nehme’s clean sheet, 2-1.
Denver women’s soccer (5-3-3, 2-0) eked out a pair of one-goal road wins. On Thursday, a Hannah Tate goal in the 57th minute secured the road sweep. Denver then traveled to Fargo to face North Dakota State on Sunday. DU fell behind early in the first half, but the Pioneers countered with goals from Brooke Ahern (39) and Emma Thielbahr (70) to complete the opening week road sweep.
Home games this week include Thursday and Saturday visits to Hamilton Gym for Summit League volleyball matchups against South Dakota State and South Dakota, respectively. Men’s soccer takes on new conference foe UMass-Amherst in western Mass next Saturday. The student ticket campout, dubbed “Hockey Night Lights,” is scheduled for this upcoming Friday night at Ritchie Center.
Thanks for the info. on women’s volleyball. Glad DU is doing well. Men’s soccer is not repeating 2024 non-conference win, but hope they find success in the conference!
FYI. Barnes & Noble took over the DU bookstore effective July 1. We visited the store in late July and the DU gear is a big improvement. The new DENVER arch is on lots of gear and I encourage people to check out the “new” bookstore!
Great feedback. The DU Bookstore was floundering. Glad to hear of the improvement!

5b, do you think Nemhe was tossed with a retaliation hit? Sounds like sub goalie might have gotten faked out? If so, that may have cost us the game. Sub hasn’t played played a minute since high school, four years ago.
The biggest issue for DU men’s soccer this season has ben timely scoring. Willoughby has missed the scoring touch this season (2) and Keegan Kelly has been out with the New Zealand National team. Welch and Collins, both still young and relatively inexperienced, are still getting their feet underneath them so lets hope they all get going as the conference season progresses.
