Denver women’s volleyball (13-5, 5-2) continued their stellar play, winning three of their last four matches, by defeating Omaha at Hamilton Gym 3-1. Denver sits in second place, tied with St. Thomas and North Dakota State. Denver opened strong, dropped the second set, won the third set on extra points (26/24) and coasted in the final set. Ava Reynolds delivered 16 kills while Jamia Johnson added 12. Maddie Winkler had 19 digs while Kate Perryman added 7 blocks. DU’s second-place deadlock with the Tommies will be broken when Denver hosts St. Thomas on Tuesday at 6:00 pm MT at Hamilton Gym.
DU women’s soccer (8-4-4) played a home match at Pioneer Field. Denver downed Omaha 2-1. DU scored in each half, Lily O’Grady in the first and Kera Nguyen in the second, for the win. Omaha scored at 67:30 but DU keeper Alina Santos stopped all three shots on goal during the match. The second-place Pioneers are 5-1 in conference play with only one conference match left to play. DU faces South Dakota at Pioneer Field next Sunday at 1 pm MT Senior Day match.
Denver men’s soccer (7-7-1) had a bumpy week on the road. The Pioneers tied Pitt 0-0 on Tuesday and fell to Virginia 2-1 on Sunday. Pitt has struggled this season at 5-6-3. The match was hard-fought as neither team could find the back of the net. DU keeper Isaac Nehme made two saves to salvage the clean sheet. Against Virginia, both teams were scoreless the first half. In the second half, the Cavaliers broke the ice when Pela Umberto scored for UVA, 1-0. Three minutes later, UVA doubled-up the score when Reese Miller solved Nehme. DU’s Ian Welch got Denver back in the match when Erik Collins fed Ian Welch for a goal. Denver could not score the balance of the match with a final score of 2-1. UVA outshot DU 16-9 in a physical match. The Pioneers were called for 15 fouls. Denver is tied with Delaware in second place in the Summit League Conference standings with three regular-season tilts remaining. Denver men’s soccer travels to Omaha to face the Mavs next Saturday at 1:30 pm MT.
Denver hockey (2-1-1) split their road series against Lindenwood University with a 4-3 loss followed by a 4-0 win, freshman Quentin Miller’s first career shutout. You can read about the surprising loss in game one and rebound victory in game two. It gets more challenging from here with a two-game road trip further east next weekend to face #9 Boston College and Northeastern.
