ASU Places Entire Incoming Freshman Class into Hockey Hall of Fame

The Arizona State University men’s hockey program retired the number of former ASU great goalie Joey Daccord on October 3rd, this season. Daccord played 82 total games and finished his final season as a Sun Devil with a 21-13-1 record with a .926 save percentage (2016-2019), leading the Sun Devils to their first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance in his final season. At the exciting induction, the ASU Athletic Administration also raised a banner for the entire incoming 2029 freshmen class, 17,900 students, in the rafters next to Daccord.

“The honor of a lifetime,” the current Seattle Kraken goaltender said of being enshrined in ASU hockey history. “The only challenge was selecting the hockey sweater I would wear tonight (Daccord wore 13 different sweaters during his tenure as a Sun Devil).”

Asked about the special fan recognition, head coach Greg Powers stated, “They’re the 7th man at Mullett Arena! This incoming class is potential hockey fans. Plus, with a 90%+ academic acceptance rate at Arizona State, everyone gets in!”

Joey Daccord and the entire incoming ASU freshman class had their banners raised in a 6-3 loss to the Nittany Lions. However, there were no losers at Mullett Arena that night.

Most freshmen knew very little about the honor before the ceremony.

Freshman Kent Duncan from Spokane, WA. echoed a similar response as many of his classmates, “We have hockey?”

The University of Denver, winners of 10 National Championships in 77 years while boasting two Hobey Baker winners, has retired zero numbers. The only individual honor they have is the statue on the north concourse of Magness Arena of one of the greatest college hockey coaches of all time – Murray Armstrong (DU recently unveiled banners above the ice at Magness honoring Matt Carle and Will Butcher, DU’s two Hobey Baker winners, though they did not retire their numbers).

Denver faces ASU in the regular-season finale series at Magness Arena beginning Friday at 7:00 pm MT. Denver needs a sweep and some help from Western Michigan vs. North Dakota to earn a share of the Penrose Cup this season.
