DU charges past Stetson Hatters

#20 Denver women’s lacrosse (8-1) was under the lights at Peter Barton Stadium on Friday night against the Stetson Hatters (0-8) and the Pioneers came away with a lopsided 21-4 victory. It was 67 degrees to start the game with sunny skies and the game was never in question.  It was a big night for Junior Olivia Ripple who surpassed 100 career goals with five goals on the night.

Ryan Dineen quickly opened the scoring at 14:38.  Carys Volley, Caroline Bowers and Caroline Keil followed with goals and it was 4-0 before Stetson got on the board to make it a 4-1 game.  Olivia Ripple was on fire and had three goals in the first period at 6:29, 5:00 and 1:43, which put her at 100 career goals.   DU led in shots on goal in the first period 13-1 and the Pioneers were  dominating draw controls by a 11-1 margin.  The  score was Denver 11, Stetson 1 at the end of the first period.

Denver blanked the Hatters 4-0 in the second period with Ripple scoring twice along with Volley and Bowers with one each.  The Pioneers were 4-1 in draw controls and Stetson had four turnovers to only one for DU.  It was DU leading 15-1 at halftime.

The third period had much of the same action with Denver having five shots on goal to one for Stetson.  Redshirt sophomore Dakota Riggio scored at 13:14  and Eva Thomson-Marr having two goals with Megan Myers with goal.  19-1  Denver after three periods.

Stetson did get three goals in the third quarter to DU’s two with Megan Myers and Ryan Dineen both getting on the board.   Along with Ripple’s five goals  Megan Myers had four shots on goals and had a hat trick with three goals for the game.  DU ended the game with a 21-6 margin in draw controls and Stetson  had 17 turnovers to 8 for Denver in the game.

DU returns to Peter Barton Stadium on Tuesday, March 17 against Charlotte at noon.  The Pios will start Big East play against UConn on Sunday, March 22 also at noon.
