The Pioneers swept Western Michigan this weekend with 3-1 and 4-2 victories at Magness Arena. Denver was the dominant team for much of the weekend, but Western’s clutch defense and timely offense kept them in both games right up until the final seconds of both games. Pioneers get their sixth straight win, takedown Western Michigan 4-2
The University of Denver Pioneers were able to sweep the Western Michigan Broncos on Saturday night and get their sixth win in a row. Heading into the game the Pioneers were a dismal 4-for-36 (11.1) on the power play so they weren’t looking to play a ‘special team game’. But it would turn into a special team game as the officials called a total of 17 penalties. Their fortunes would change as the Pioneers would end up going 3-for-9 on the power play in this one, and that’d be the story of the game. Gambrell’s surprise return leads DU to victory over Western Michigan
In a last minute lineup change, #3 University of Denver Pioneers head coach Jim Montgomery decided to shake things up and insert previously injured star Dylan Gambrell into the lineup and start his line. Men’s Hockey Sweeps Spartans
Denver hockey rolled into East Lansing Michigan and exited with a sweep. On Friday, Denver defeated the Spartans 2-1 behind Tanner Jaillet’s 19 of 20 saves along with goals from super freshman Henrik Borgstrom and sophomore Jarid Lukosevicius. On Saturday afternoon, Troy Terry scored one goal and another nearly invisible goal to lead the Pio’s to a 3-1 victory. The Pioneers have moved to 4-2 behind a four-game winning streak with one of their top scorers, Dylan Gambrell, out of the lineup with injury. Next series: At Magness Arena next weekend vs. Western Michigan.

Pioneer Family Loses DU Hall of Fame Hockey Alumnus George Konik at age 79
The Denver Pioneers lost one of its hockey greats this weekend, as former DU all-American and DU Hall of Famer George Konik passed away in his sleep at his home in Eagan, Minn. on Oct. 21.
