For two periods of game one of this weekend’s series in Kalamazoo, Michigan, the #2 Denver Pioneers (12-3-0, 2-3-0 NCHC) were outshot and outworked by the #7 Western Michigan Broncos (10-2-1, 6-0-1 NCHC). The Pioneers bounced back for a strong third period but the Broncos’ three goals – one in the final minute of the first period and two less than a minute apart in the middle of the second period – were enough to earn the win and keep the Pioneers’ uncharacteristically cold offense from completing a third-period comeback. Jake Fisher and James Reeder each scored in the third period but it wasn’t enough as the Broncos all but cruised to the 3-2 victory, Denver’s third-straight loss after skating to a 12-0 start to the season. The Pioneer guards overwhelmed the Hornets Wednesday night at Hamilton Gym. Denver shot Sacramento State out of the gym going 14-34 (43%) from three-point range and coasted to a well-deserved win. Scoring Drought Leads to 68-54 Utah Tech Loss
Denver men’s basketball (3-5) played the Utah Tech Trailblazers Wednesday afternoon at the Stew Morrill Classic in Missoula, Montana. DU was without center Isaiah Carr, out indefinitely with a hand injury. It was the third game in three days for a depleted roster missing three of their four front line players from earlier in the season. That left the Pioneers with one big man, Pedro Lopez Sanvicente to protect the paint along with a host of freshmen guards and transfer guard Nicholas Shogbonyo. Ultimately, it was a ten-minute scoreless streak that stretched from the first half into the second half that put DU in a deficit they could never overcome. Five minutes later, Keegan Kelly took a feed from Sam Bassett to build a 2-0 lead. A little more then a minute after that, Sam Basset fed Trevor Wright to stack another goal on the visiting Runnin’ Bulldogs, 3-0. The Pioneers were perfect on all three shots they took in the first 45 minutes while Gardner-Webb never had a shot on frame. Continue reading First Half Scoring Spree Sinks Gardner-Webb, 3-0
Arizona State Completes Weekend Sweep with 5-2 Win
You would have to get on the way-back machine to experience a home loss sweep like this weekend at the hands of Arizona State. In February of 2020, DU was swept by Minnesota Duluth at Magness Arena – 1,757 days ago. The 5-2 loss Saturday night was a repeat of Friday night when ASU was the better team on the ice as well. DU had critical defensive breakdowns and could not execute on several grade-A scoring chances against a relentless ASU team. Luke Pavicich was golden between the pipes for the Sun Devils and stifled a number of great scoring opportunities from DU. Denver got off 60 shots on the night to 49 for ASU but only a pair of shots found their intended target. Matt Davis was not the problem either as DU turnovers, odd-man rushes and clean scoring looks carried over from Friday night’s game. The final ASU goal was an empty-netter and Davis made several big stops on the night to keep DU in the game. Continue reading Arizona State Completes Weekend Sweep with 5-2 Win

Denver Men’s Soccer Earns Surprising #3 Overall Seed in NCAA Tournament
In an unexpected decision from the NCAA Men’s Soccer Tournament selection committee, Denver Men’s Soccer (12-3-4) was given the #3 seed overall seed. This assignment follows a disappointing home loss to UMKC on home turf Saturday in the Summit League Championship. With the top-four seeding, the Pioneers will enjoy home-field advantage all the way until the College Cup semifinals in Cary, North Carolina, should the advance that far. Summit League champion Kansas City will face St. LouisĀ in the first round thanks to their automatic bid. Continue reading Denver Men’s Soccer Earns Surprising #3 Overall Seed in NCAA Tournament
